The countdown has begun: just a few days left until the popular St. Martin's lantern parade in 2021. They still don't have onematching lantern? Then you probably need an idea that is quick and easy to do. And since the owl has been popular with young and old for some time, we would like to offer you a few instructions for this motif today. We have put together three variants with which you can make an owl lantern, even together with your children and normal craft materials. Create unique St. Martin's Lanterns that you and your children will be proud to wear and display!
Let's start with what is probably the quickest and easiest idea, because you can make this owl using a finished lantern. In addition, we have matching onesOwl templates, which you can print out and use, which of course makes the task even easier. This is how you can make the owl lantern:
- Chinese lantern in any color
- Cardboard
- Hot glue
- Craft glue
- Scissors
Build the lantern and print out the templates. Cut them out and glue them to their respective locations. You can use both owl templates for a lantern and create a two-sided lantern, or you can just stick on one owl. It is best to use the finished lantern with a lantern stick on which you can easily hang it. The lantern is not only ideal for the St. Martin's parade, but can also decorate the children's room.

Make your own owl lantern with self-painted elements
Would you like thatMake your own St. Martin's lantern? All you need is paper and some craft supplies you already have around the house! This project is also very simple, so your children can easily help out. If you would like to make this owl lantern, proceed as follows:
- white paper
- Felt-tip pens (or other pens/paints if desired)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Googly eyes
Take the sheet of paper, cut it in half and draw feathers on one of the two halves and along the length to create a colorful plumage. Then fold the paper lengthwise and make cuts along the fold at equal intervals (notcut through!). Unfold the paper again and form a cylinder by gluing both ends together.
You can then make a handle for the owl lantern from the other half of paper by cutting out a strip (alternatively, you can also use wire or string) and painting it however you like. Then glue the two ends of the strip to the insides of the owl lantern. You can now use the remaining piece of paper for the eyes, beak and owl feet. Trace them, cut them out and glue them to the desired places on the lantern. Complete the owl with the googly eyes.
Use this lantern with a lantern stick or tape a base and place an LED candle inside. Never use a real candle as there is a high risk of fire!

Lantern for children with tracing paper
You will get a beautifully dimmed light if you combine the lantern with a few elementsmade of tracing paperprovided. These instructions for making lanterns are also very quick and easy. The tracing paper can be white as in the example, but other colors are of course also permitted and look nice. Since this lantern is also made entirely of paper and can quickly catch fire, you should not use real candles. If you want to make this owl lantern, you will need:
- white paper
- colored paper
- Tracing paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Lineal
- Glue
You can make this owl lantern using a template that you make yourself. To do this, draw an owl motif on white paper and cut it out. Ideally, the stomach and the eyes each have a hole, which later serve as windows through which the light can shine. Now use this template to transfer the motif twice onto any colored paper. Cut out the elements. Also cut out some wings.
Glue the owls onto tracing paper and cut it out too. This is how you close the prepared holes. Glue the wings in place. Now you have to glue the two owl parts together. To do this, prepare a wide strip of paper whose long sides are jagged (you can use zigzag scissors for this). The strip should be wide enough for an LED tea light to fit on it. Place a ruler on the prongs and fold them upwards.
Apply glue to the outsides of the spikes and adhere them along the bottom edge of one of the owls. Repeat with the other side and then make the eyes (optional). Now add a handle made of paper, string or wire and you're ready to move.
