Gnomes are still one of the most popular decorations, not just for winter and Christmas, but for pretty much every season and every occasion. We have already shown you how to make gnomes out of pine green, especially for autumn and winter. But wouldn't you like some cute characters indoors too? How and with what could you make autumn gnomes?
Gnomes inside, gnomes outside, at the window, on the stairs or the table - they are simply part of it and for many people are even something like a lucky charm. Grow your Secret Santa family or start now!
In principle, you proceed in the same way as with all other elves, only this time you make sure to use autumnal colors and patterns and give the little figures a few suitable motifs. This is what you can do:
Secret Santa hat with paper cone and fabric
- Paper mache cones of any size (27 cm high, 10 cm diameter)
- Cone template from the link below
- Beard template from the link below
- Wooden beads
- Acrylic paint in skin color and brush
- Fabric in fall color and/or pattern (e.g. plaid); Felt is also suitable
- Kunstfell
- Spray adhesive
- sandpaper
- clear and paper tape
- Scissors (fabric scissors)
- Hot glue
How to make an autumn gnome:
- Print out the templates. For this you should select the setting for poster, which is 4 A4 sheets. Cut them out along the outside lines and tape them together. Save the leftover paper. Check that the template actually fits around the cone before continuing.
- Take the large piece of scrap paper and use it to draw a curve parallel to the bottom curve of the cone template. The strip you receive is the one that will be the gnome's face and will not be covered by the fabric. It should be approx. 4.5 cm wide.
- Cut the strip and place the paper back around the cone for a quick test. Save the cut strip.
- Paint the bottom part of the cardboard cone with the selected acrylic paint and let it dry.
- In the meantime, cut the fabric for the hat using the same template.
- Place paper tape around the bottom part of the cone intended for the face.
- Spray the rest of the cone with spray adhesive and attach the fabric to create the hat.
- While the glue dries, you can make the beard for the gnome. Using the template, draw the correct shape on the back of the faux fur.
- Trim the beard, being careful not to cut off the hair as well. Put them aside.
- Glue the beard directly under the fabric hat.
- Sand a wooden bead flat in one spot, apply hot glue there, and adhere it to the fabric, just above the beard. Complete!

Make autumn gnomes with children - popsicle sticks and autumn leaves
In the example you see an artificial leaf. But if youcraft with natural materialsIf you want, you can also go collecting real leaves instead. Maple leaves have the ideal shape for a gnome's beard and are therefore exactly the right choice. The craft idea is also perfect for kindergarten or primary school.
- 3 Ice styles
- Craft glue
- Paintings in Herbstönen
- Scissors
- Pattern paper in autumn colors, also with autumn motifs
- cardboard
- Autumn leaf
A notice:Instead of popsicle sticks and motif paper, you can simply use craft cardboard from which you cut the triangle.
Once you have collected all the materials, you can make the autumn gnomes:
- Glue the three popsicle sticks together in the shape of a triangle.
- Once the glue has dried, use this triangle as a template to cut out a triangle from your selected paper.
- Cut out an oval nose from the cardboard.
- Paint one side of the wooden triangle in any autumn color. You can use acrylic paints, but also felt-tip pens or even wax crayons.
- Apply glue to the other side and stick the triangle to the paper triangle. If there is any paper sticking out on the sides, cut it off.
- Then glue the leaf to the back of the resulting gnome hat. Make sure that it sticks out enough at the bottom and that the tip of the sheet also points downwards. Feel free to experiment with leaves from other trees.
- Finally, add the nose and you're done. You are also welcome to add other decorative elements.
Tipp:You can also make cute pendants out of these gnomes by making them double-sided (glue the backs of two gnomes together with hanging string between them). The pendants are nice to look at from both sides when they are hanging freely and rotating in the room.
