Bottle Painting Ideas: Which Colors Should You Get?

For many craft enthusiasts, the question arises as to which color is best for painting bottles. This depends on whether the bottle will continue to be used and you will drink from it or whether it will be washed in the dishwasher. The colors for decorative bottles should also be able to keep up, especially if they are used asDecoration in the gardenbe put on display. It is also important what the bottle is made of.

  • Acrylic paints are suitable for metal bottles (if the bottle is not being used but is just for decoration) and water-based acrylic paints (if you want to decorate a drinking bottle). Watercolors are not suitable for painting on metal.
  • Porcelain paints are best suited for painting wine bottles and other decorative glass bottles.
  • It is best to use a porcelain drawing pen for the contours. This way you can draw the motifs on the bottle and wipe them off again if necessary.
  • For “graffiti” motifs and Scandinavian drawings, you can use water-based porcelain markers. You can then burn the motifs drawn on glass or metal bottles.

Ideas for painting bottles: What to paint glass and metal with?

Water-based acrylic paints are best suited for metal drinking bottles that we use during sports or those that children take with them to school or kindergarten. In contrast toordinary acrylic paintsdo not contain any solvents. They can be combined with each other, meaning you can easily mix several acrylic colors. Regular acrylic paints and water-based acrylic paints cannot be mixed together.

Bottle Painting Ideas: Seal Water-Based Acrylic Paints

The water-based acrylic paints are considered non-toxic or less toxic compared to ordinary acrylic paints, but have a low hiding power. Therefore, you may need to apply two coats of paint when painting a dark bottle. It is also important that you fix the colors after application. Follow the instructions on the package. Alternatively, you can use dishwasher-safe Mod Podge, a transparent adhesive used for decoupage. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the dried design to set the colors.

Painting bottles: Use Window Color

A special window paint is called Window Color. Similar to acrylic paints, it is sold in liquid form and is applied with a brush. In contrast toother paint colorsWindow Color is not applied directly to the bottle, but rather to a transparent film. You paint the motif on the film, then peel it off and then stick the motif to the bottle. You can remove the motifs at any time and they do not leave any sticky marks.

Painting drinking bottles: instructions

If you've never bottled orPainted cupsthen you can start with floral patterns. They are colorful and appear cheerful. The first idea we're going to show you is good for complete beginners. You need the following materials:

  • cotton swab
  • Water-based acrylic paints (purple and green)
  • Acrylic paint in light blue
  • a flat brush
  • a brush (size 0 with oval tip)
  • wooden skewer
  • Disposable plates

How to paint lavender flowers on a metal bottle:

Apply the sky blue color first. To do this, use the flat brush. Let the base paint dry overnight and then the next day put some green acrylic paint on a disposable plate. Place the wooden skewer lengthwise on the plate and turn it over so that it is halfway covered with the green paint. Use it as a “stamp” and stamp the blades of grass onto the bottle. You can mix several shades of green to create exciting effects.

Then put some purple acrylic paint on a disposable plate. Dip a cotton swab into the paint and stamp the lavender flowers onto the bottle. Allow the paint to dry overnight. It's best to check the next morning to make sure the paint is completely dry before applying the Mod Podge glue. Otherwise the motifs may smear. Then apply a thin coat of Mod Podge with a flat brush and allow the adhesive to dry for 2 hours. Repeat the process (apply a thin layer of Mod Podge, let it dry for 2 hours) two more times. You can use the bottle after two days, but do not wash it in the dishwasher for the first month. After 28 days the bottle is dishwasher safe.

Bottle Painting Ideas: Easy Sunflower Patterns

Also sunflowersare among the simple motifs. These are the necessary materials:

  • a flat brush
  • light blue color
  • light yellow, sunny yellow and dark yellow colors
  • dark brown color
  • a porcelain drawing pencil for the contours
  • a size O brush and a size 10 brush with oval tips
  • a disposable cup

For the next craft idea, first apply a background color to the bottle and let it dry. Then draw the sunflower outlines on the bottle (to make it faster, you can make a template on paper). Then paint the sunflowers. To do this, first apply a dark yellow shade and then a light yellow shade only in the center of the petals. This makes the sunflower appear more voluminous.

Of course you can also paint several flowers on the bottle. In this case, fill in the contours of the largest flower first. The largest flower should be painted a bold color so that it really makes a statement. You can simply scatter the other flowers around them.

Painting bottles: motifs in Scandinavian style

It's much easier if you buy colored drinking bottles and use self-adhesive laser-cut motif stencils to transfer different motifs to the bottles. To do this, simply clean the bottle thoroughly, carefully remove grease and dirt and let it dry. Then spray the stencil with a special sealing spray. Thanks to this spray, the stencil sticks to the bottle. To prevent the bottle from moving, you can fix it on the table with a bit of modeling clay. Then paint white water-based acrylic paint over the stencil.

"Pajaki" is a traditional good luck charm from Poland that is hung on various occasions. This is how you can make the mobile!

Remove the template before the paint begins to dry and wash it thoroughly to remove any remaining paint.

Painting drinking bottles: geometric patterns

Don't have a self-adhesive stencil at home? Then use paper tape to create dramatic geometric patterns. Unscrew the lid, then apply a background color (ideally use white or a neutral and light shade like ivory). Let the background paint dry overnight and draw dots that represent the corners of the square motif. Then connect these dots with the tape, you should then be able to quickly see the pattern. Paint the squares with water-based acrylic paints and then peel off the paper tape. Work quickly before the paint dries.

Fix the colors with three coats of Mod Podge only after they are completely dry.

Painting old bottles

If you want to paint old bottles, you can also use ordinary acrylic paints. They have a decisive advantage, namely that they are waterproof and do not need to be sealed. They are therefore perfect for painting bottles, which are then placed in the garden or on the balcony as decoration. Our tip: Choose a wine bottle with an unusual shape. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and place the bottle in it. Leave the bottle in the water overnight, it will loosen the adhesive of the label. The next morning you can carefully peel off the label and remove the remaining adhesive with warm, soapy water. Clean the bottle thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.

Then apply a background color and let it dry. In the meantime, you can print and cut out a fall leaf template. Then carefully transfer the stencil to the bottle by drawing the outlines of the autumn leaves with a drawing pen. Then fill in the contours with white paint. You can then use a size 0 brush to add color accents in orange. You don't need to seal the paint, but to be on the safe side, you shouldn't put the bottle in the dishwasher.

Paint and illuminate bottles

You can achieve the frosted glass effect with a special color spray. Such sprays are available at most hardware stores. Place the bottle in a dry outdoor area and spray it with the spray. Then let them dry completely and:

Then drape a battery-operated string of lights inside the bottle. If desired, you can tie a decorative ribbon around the neck of the bottle. You can also decorate the bottle with bells, stars or Christmas balls.

Painting bottles: winter motifs

Such beautiful lanterns look particularly good on the garden table or windowsill, especially at Christmas. However, complicated winter motifs require skill. Our tip: Plan the picture in detail and paint it on paper first.

Painting decorative bottles

You can also paint decorative bottles. If you have already marbled Easter eggs, then you will definitely succeed with your next craft idea. First apply the black paint, let it dry and then cover half of the bottle with paper tape and marble the other half. A stripe in bronze color loosens up the strict monochrome look.

Painting bottles in boho style

With a heart-shaped stamp and white acrylic paint you can make cool boho-style wine bottles. Simply remove the label, stamp the wine bottle with heart motifs and decorate it with decorative lace ribbons. Complete!

If you wish, you can also illuminate the beautifully painted wine bottle. To do this, simply put a string of lights into the bottle.
