You can make a mobile out of chestnuts and decorate your home with them both indoors and outdoors. Whether you use the chestnuts alone or combine them with other natural materials to add a bit of color to the hanging decoration is up to you.

Before you get to work, prepare some materials and tools. You need:

  • Chestnuts
  • Yarn
  • Drill with a thin attachment or awl
  • Base (e.g. driftwood, branch, wreath, embroidery hoop, etc.)
  • optionally other natural materials for the pendants (e.g. leaves, acorns, twigs, beechnutsor even mussels) or artificial craft materials such as pompoms

How to proceed:

  • All natural materials can be pierced so you can thread string through them. While most of them can be done with a regular awl, you may need a drill for the base if you don't have enough strength. You can also simply tie the individual garlands to the base.
  • After drilling through all the materials, you can design them if you wish. Chestnuts or leaves can, for examplepainted with patternsor sprayed with a metallic paint. Get creative!
  • Cut pieces of yarn to any length.
  • Tie a knot at one end.
  • Thread a chestnut and let it slip through to the knot.

  • Tie a second knot at any distance from the first and add the next chestnut.
  • Continue like this until you have the desired amount of chestnuts on the thread or until you have reached the end. Leave enough string at the end to attach the chain to the base.
  • Make as many of these necklaces as you like.
  • Finally, attach it to the base: either you tie the yarn around it and knot it, or you drill holes through the base, thread the string through it and tie a knot on the other side to hold the chain in place.
  • Tie string to the base for hanging and decorate with theautumnal mobileany place in the house or garden.

You can also design one or two chestnuts in this interesting way. To do this, drill several holes all around at the same height in the fruit and insert toothpicks into them. Now a wool thread is tied to a stick and then alternately passed over and under the toothpicks. You can get more detailed instructions and ideas for spider websin this articleview.
