If you have an old lampshade, it's easy to give it a stylish update. Simply restyle with creativity and imagination. First remove the lampshade cover so that only the lampshade rings and the light bulb holder remain.

Create a new umbrella from an old one

There are plenty of chains or cords available by the meter, which you can wrap beautifully around the lampshade with a little skill. Decorate with beads and seed beads and place on the stand of the original lamp.

What is needed?

A modern floor lamp can cost a fortune and you can easily create one with a simple design yourself. You can even find sets in craft stores or furniture stores that make the work a lot easier. Basically, the following materials are required for a DIY umbrella:

  • 1 x Lampenschirmmetal ring
  • 1 x lampshade metal ring with light bulb holder
  • 1 x Lamp Holder
  • Cable – length can be selected individually
  • 1 x lamp stand or possibly make one yourself (tripod tripod instructions – at the bottom)
  • Hot glue

Shabby Chic Umbrella – Instructions

In the first instructions we present how a shabby style floor lamp can be designed with a little effort. A floor lamp with a beautiful wooden lamp base can certainly be found in the attic or at the flea market. The base of the original lamp is made of wood and is easy to work with. It has been painted cream and lightly sanded to achieve the desired vintage look.

Spice up the lampshade

In this variant, you don't make your own umbrella, but rather redesign a ready-made umbrella very creatively. Depending on the diameter, you can buy one like this for around 20 euros in almost any furniture store. Typically shabby, white ruffles are a good choice for decoration in this style.

Make your own lampshade for a floor lamp with ruffles – this is how it works!

You make the ruffles using simple large white muffin cups that you attach to the lampshade and glue in place. To make the umbrella really lush and magnificent, you should have a lot of muffin cases on hand.

Ruffles made from muffin cups

Take a muffin cup, flatten it and fold it into quarters to form a triangle. Only smooth out the tip of the triangle and fold it diagonally through the middle again. Leave the wavy edges nice and airy and attach the other side to the lampshade using hot glue.

White shabby lampshade

Fix the muffin cases very close to each other and arrange them nicely in different directions. The parchment paper of the molds is white-translucent and allows pleasant, diffuse light to pass through. This makes it ideal for all lighting craft ideas.

Scandinavian flair in black and white

Alternatively, you can cover a lampshade. Then you would need the two lampshade metal rings - one with and one without a lamp holder, special lampshade foil from the craft supply and fabric with a color and pattern of your choice. Tie the foil in a circle with the same diameter as the metal rings and secure it with glue. Now attach the lampshade rings to the bottom and top of the cylinder. Then cut the cover fabric a few centimeters wider and cover the umbrella. Use the remaining centimeters of fabric to secure the lampshade rings on the bottom and top sides. This is where foldback brackets can be very useful.

Make your own industrial style lampshade for a floor lamp – instructions

In a similar way, it works to use rabbit screens from the hardware store instead of special lampshade film. It is flexible and very easy to cut. It is advisable to choose a relatively dense one because it is simply better suited for an umbrella.

With rabbit grid

You only need to cut the rabbit grid 2-3 centimeters longer than the diameter of the metal rings and just as wide as the desired lampshade height. A pair of pliers will then be helpful.

Make a lampshade for a floor lamp yourself - bend the wire

Bend the rabbit grille around the lampshade metal rings on the bottom and top of the lampshade and secure it firmly with wire.

Tie rabbit mesh

The two ends of the rabbit wire should overlap a little in height. These fit together very well and are also secured with wire.

Wrap the rabbit mesh with wire

If the rabbit grille is stable enough, you can forego the lampshade ring and only use it with the light bulb holder. The overall stability of the lampshade depends primarily on its diameter and height.

Dress up with plucking

If the homemade lampshade is already finished, you can leave it as it is or cover it with fabric. In our example, a floor lamp for the hallway is made in the industrial style and used for it. Instead, you can also use wallpaper or nice, sturdier paper.

Arrange the interior beautifully

You can also purchase a stand or lamp base separately from a furniture store or online if you don't have a used one. Complement your industrial style floor lamp with a metal one or make yourself a tripod. We'll tell you how it works!

Make your own stand and lampshade for a floor lamp - simple tripod

All you need to build a tripod yourself are:

  • three long wooden sticks
  • a wooden disc – at least 30 cm in diameter
  • nice leather strap to tie

Make your own lampshade for a floor lamp and stage it

First you have to determine the position of all three legs or wooden sticks exactly. You should circumscribe an equilateral triangle so that the construction ultimately remains stable. Cross the wooden sticks and secure them with a string. Mark three points on the wooden disc where the umbrella should actually be. Drill through these places so that the wooden sticks fit through them and they fix the wooden disc. Now tie the wooden sticks aesthetically using the leather strap and set up the lampshade. All that's left is to install a light bulb and turn on the light.
