Make your own winter arrangements for outside: decorate your house entrance and garden!

Evergreen branches are an inexpensive and beautiful way to decorate your home for the holidays. Not only can you make beautiful wreaths and garlands, you can also make extraordinary winter arrangements for outside. Cedar, spruce, pine, juniper, cypress, boxwood, magnolia - the natural materials with different color and structure differences always make every arrangement unique. And with baubles, fairy lights and bows you can create a Christmas atmosphere in no time. We give you ideas on how you can conjure up winter arrangements in tubs and pots that are particularly eye-catching in front of the entrance to the house or in the garden.

To capture the natural charm of freshnessTo be able to enjoy coniferous branches for longer, you have to supply them with water. This way they will keep their green color and their needles longer. To do this, you either have to water the winter arrangements once a week or simply put the branches in damp florist sponges in advance.

In order to make attractive winter arrangements in pots yourself, you have to arrange your plants according to the“Thriller-Player-Filler” Methodcombine.

  • The thriller is the eye-catcher that you place in the center - birch branches, decorative willow or dogwood branches, a large metal lantern, a willow ball, a dwarf spruce.
  • The spiller is the fir green that hangs over the edge - To add some color to the winter arrangement, you can also choose branches with special leaf colors, such as magnolia leaves, which turn brown due to late frosts.
  • Filler is the rest of the decoration that you use to fill the gaps in the bucket. There is usually a large selection here. Christmas tree balls, pine cones, large festive bows provide a WOW factor.

This beautiful outdoor Christmas decoration is ready in 10 minutes! When putting together the arrangement, just pay attention to the shape. For containers and flower pots, a triangular arrangement looks best. Then you can let your imagination run wild and arrange the selected decorations between the fir branches in the arrangement as you wish.

And this is how it works step by step:

What you need:
Buckets and soil
3 birch branches
Branches of noble fir (silver fir), pine, cedar, juniper, winterberry

  1. Fill the bucket with soil.(For tall, slim pots, you can first fill one or two hand-widths of gravel, expanded clay or Styrofoam and then spread the soil on top.)
  2. Insert the birch branches into the ground as far as possible.
  3. Take a few noble fir branches and tuck them around the birch branches.
  4. Now distribute the pine branches in the pot. They are similar to the noble fir, but hang more and are therefore well suited as gap fillers.
  5. Insert your cedar branches along the edge and drape them beautifully.
  6. Plant washer branches in clusters along the front to show off the pretty blue berries.
  7. Top it off with bright red winter berries. These are best placed in the front center and immediately create a Christmas atmosphere!

Christmas decoration ideas for outside with fairy lights

If you can't find winter berries, there are other ways to add red accents to your Christmas arrangement. Here for example do 3Pomegranates as decorationa great figure. With their bright red color, they look like Christmas tree baubles and go wonderfully with the pine green! This beautiful winter arrangement consists of incense cedar, boxwood and white pine branches.

Brighten up gray winter days with fairy lights!

Fairy lights are particularly associated with a festive Christmas atmosphere and should of course not be missing here either. With their soft glow, they conjure up a wonderful atmosphere in the garden in the evening.

Make sure that the outdoor fairy lights have an IP protection class of over IP44. In addition, experts generally advise against using fairy lights with batteries outdoors. However, with solar fairy lights you can use light accents anywhere. For example, you can drape the lights between the branches and hide the solar panel in the back of the pot.

Your Christmas arrangement will definitely be an eye-catcher if you use a light ball. Ball lights are also available in different sizes and with different operating modes. This idea is also suitable for DIY fans: convert old glass lampshades from the flea market into illuminated balls for the garden.

Arrange a winter fir arrangement in a hanging basket

Other winter arrangements can be hung atmospherically with hanging baskets. It is important here that you do not overload the hanging basket with decorations. So that you pay more attention to the weight, you can hang the hanging basket first and only then add the decorations. Also try to adjust the weight of the branches accordingly and avoid using large, heavy natural materials.

Materials required:
– Hanging basket and soil
– secateurs
– a mixture of pine, fir and cedar branches
– thin tree branches
– Pine cones, berries, ribbons, ornaments or other decorations
– optional: snow spray

  1. Fill your hanging basket with soil.
  2. Tuck tree branches into the center to add height to your winter arrangement.
  3. Now put the fir greenery around the branches. A large piece will serve as a backdrop for the decorations. Here you should also pay attention to the triangular shape of the arrangement, like the bucket.
  4. Next, add a few larger pine branches and fill in the larger gaps.
  5. Then it's the turn of the cedar branches.
  6. Last but not least, trim off smaller branches to fill any gaps and bulk out your basket.
  7. Once you're happy with the shape of the arrangement, you can add the decorations and spray the whole thing with fake snow for a snowy look. This also extends the lifespan of the fir branches.

Make your own Christmas arrangement in a balcony box

Now we'll show you how to arrange the branches in a rectangular flower box.

For this project you will need:
Balcony box
Stones, expanded clay or decorative glass marbles
Floral foam blocks
Earth
garden shears
Gardening gloves
Natural materials – fir greens, dogwood branches, magnolia leaves, holly berries, spindle bush (euonymus), spruce cones

  1. First fill the flower box with gravel or another material. The weight of the gravel gives the lightweight planter greater stability.
  2. Then place the floral foam blocks on top. If necessary, you can fill the gaps with soil or gravel.
  3. Cut the pine branches at a 45 degree angle to make them easier to insert into the foam. The fir green goes in the back so that it forms the backdrop for your winter arrangement.
  4. Now stick a few shorter branches in the middle. There should be some gaps at the front and middle.
  5. Now it's time to add some color! Distribute four sprigs of holly berries evenly throughout the planter.
  6. Now you form the heart of the arrangement. The magnolia leaves and spindle bush branches go in the front center of the box.
  7. Last but not least, add the dogwood branches. These should be arranged in a radial pattern, like a crown.

Winter arrangement with candle

And last but not least, we'll show you a nice idea for a small winter arrangement with a candle. It would be a real eye-catcher on the dining table on the terrace or in the winter garden.

  1. Place a large can of food upside down in the center of a wooden box. Then arrange the smaller jars and cans around them.
  2. Fill each “vase” halfway with water. (This means the branches stay fresh longer)
  3. To make the centerpiece of your table decorations, place a pillar candle in a large glass.
  4. Then insert the branches into the vases so that they are hidden underneath.
  5. If desired, you can complete the Christmas arrangement with cones or a string of lights.
