Choose balcony carpet, wooden tiles or paint as floor covering

Most of the time, the original flooring of the balcony is not particularly nice. This is especially a problem if the owner does not have a garden and only has the opportunity to cultivate plants and vegetables there. After all, everyone wants it to be nice, especially if you spend a lot of time there. Fortunately, these days there are different ways to spice up the flower and vegetable garden on the balcony with suitable flooring, be it a balcony carpet, tiles or a wooden floor. We present you 4 options. You can choose one of these variants to make the balcony more cheerful and comfortable or you can leave it as it is. Whatever you choose, you have the opportunity to create a great balcony garden. Just remember to talk to the property manager before making any changes to make sure you don't break any rules. Choose your flooring wisely!

If you choose the balcony carpet as floor covering, there are a few things you should definitely keep in mind. The balcony carpet is not only expensive, but can also damage the balcony floor. This especially happens if the outdoor carpet remains damp for a long time because you have soaked it by watering the plants or it has rained and snowed for a long time and cannot dry.

Especially if the balcony floor is made of concrete, cracks can occur due to temperature fluctuations and frost. If you live in a rented apartment, it wouldn't be a good idea to glue the carpet to the floor. You could later be accused of damaging the floor and ultimately want to get your deposit back later.

To avoid all of these problems, only get a balcony carpet if the balcony has an awning or canopy and is protected from rain. In winter and during periods of rain, it is best to take the carpet aside or store it in a dry place. Also, make sure that too much water does not drip onto the carpet when watering and never place flower pots directly on the carpet. After all, you don't want to damage the expensive balcony carpet, right?

2. Wooden flooring

If you prefer not to use a balcony carpet, you can also get a setwooden tilesBuy one that you put together according to the instructions. This variant offers several options and is probably the best choice for a balcony gardener. For them it doesn't matter how big the balcony is. You can also decide for yourself whether you want to cover the entire floor or just a part, and especially which part.

The wooden tiles are simply put together

Because the wooden tiles are slightly raised, the entire floor can dry better when wet than the balcony carpet, which even protects the original flooring underneath. The wooden tiles also have their advantages visually. They create a cozy, homely atmosphere, which is exactly the opposite of the sterile and cold typical floor covering on a balcony.

3. Artificial grass as a balcony carpet

Even if many doRasenteppichas boring and perhaps old-fashioned, that is not the case at all. A lawn carpet or even real grass can, on the contrary, be a great option for the balcony floor. Also make sure that the grass carpet is slightly above the actual floor covering. Such a rug is especially great if you are the proud owner of a dog. In this case, you should make sure that the dog does not urinate on the balcony carpet made of artificial grass.

Instead, provide a special container or mat on which to train the dog to do his business. Maybe you have already heard of “Porch Potty” which is a great solution if you live in an apartment. This will help prevent urine from seeping through the carpet. This allows the dog to do his business without you having to take him for a walk and he also learns to only use grassy areas for this.

There are different versions of the Porch Potty. This means you can choose between artificial and real grass, which can even be watered automatically. The urine, in turn, can drain into a container or away from the balcony. But even if you don't own a dog, the lawn carpet is an interesting choice instead of a normal balcony carpet. Lay it out correctly from the start so you don't have any problems later. The same applies here: Do not leave it lying directly on the floor and do not let it get wet. Just like the balcony carpet, the moisture would damage the flooring, regardless of whether it is made of concrete or another material. As you know, constant moisture attracts pests and creates mold and therefore an unpleasant smell.

4. Paint instead of balcony carpet

Painting the existing floor covering is also a great alternative to the balcony carpet. However, make sure that the apartment management allows this option if you do not own the apartment. You can choose between a variety of bright, bold colors. Another great option are colors that, for example, imitate stone or other natural materials.

When choosing, you must make sure that you choose a color that is also suitable for the outdoor area and the surface you will be painting. After all, you want it to last a long time. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and protect yourself from the gases that emanate from the paint when painting.
