Why does feather grass look so dry after winter?

Feder grass is one of the semi -winter green ornamental grass, which means that it sometimes retains its structure in winter, but often takes on a dry, straw -like color. This is completely normal! Especially after a cold or damp winter, it may be that your feather grass looks pale and weak. But don't be fooled - it is still alive! The new green shoots come by themselves as soon as the conditions are right.

When does feather grass become green again?

The exact time depends above all on the weather:

  • Temperature:As soon as it stays over 8–10 ° C longer, growth begins. This usually happens between the end of March and May - depending on the region.
  • Location:In the sun it is faster! If your feather grass is in the shade, it takes longer.
  • Soil quality:Feder grass likes it dry and permeable. If it is in heavy, humid earth, growth can be inhibited.

Important:If nothing happens until mid -May, something could not be seen from March to May at the latest. If your feather grass does not show any new green stalks by mid -May, it may be damaged (e.g. by too much moisture or frost). But don't worry, we'll be right away!

How can you promote the growth of feather grass in spring?

If your feather grass does not yet become green again, you can support it with these measures:

1. Remove the old leaves & comb out the spring grass

A strong pruning is not necessary - instead you can gently comb the dry stalks:

  • Wear gloves (the dry stalks can prick).
  • Use a rough garden claw or just your hands to carefully remove the dead stalks.
  • If necessary, cut off individual dried tips with a garden scissors - but please not too deep!

Why not a radical pruning?
Feder grass continues to grow out of the middle. A deep cut can delay the growth or weaken the plant.

2. Ensure the right location

If your feather grass grows at a shady or moist location, this could be the reason why it is difficult in spring. A sunny, dry place with permeable soil is ideal. If necessary, you can dig the grass carefully and place it at a better location.

3. Avoid waterlogging

Feder grass does not tolerate permanent moisture. If your floor is very heavy, a layer of sand or gravel helps to improve the permeability.

4. Fertilizer? Only with caution!

Too much fertilizer is more harmful because feather grass is naturally frugal. If the soil is very low in nutrients, a small amount of organic long -term fertilizers (e.g. compost or horn shavings) in March is sufficient.

So you test whether your feather grass is still alive

Make the root check:

  • Carefully dig a small part of the plant.
  • Are the roots still firm and whitish? Great, then you just need some time.
  • Are the roots mushy or completely dried? Then it probably didn't survive the winter.

Can you transplant feather grass or set it up?

Yes, if your feather grass has not survived or you would like more, spring is the best time for a new planting.

This is how the new planting succeeds:

  1. Choose onesunny locationWith permeable soil.
  2. Dig a plant hole that is twice as large as the root ball.
  3. Mix sand or gravel underground so that the water can run better.
  4. Use the grass and pour it in well.

After a few weeks, your new feather grass begins to grow - and next spring it will look great again!

Even if your feather grass still looks straw in March - stay patient! Depending on the weather and location, it will drive out again between March and May. Support it with a gentle combing, a sunny location and good drainage. So you can soon look forward to fresh, bright green! And if nothing still happens by May? Then it is worth taking a closer look - sometimes a fresh start is the best solution.
