Does your Christmas rose let the flowers hang? This could have one of these reasons!

So you thought you would try the snow rose, as the plant is also called. So far everything has been going wonderfully, but suddenly you notice: the Christmas rose is letting its flowers hang. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the care and location? In any case, there is no reason to panic, because as long as they are “just” hanging, there is usually still something that can be done.

In principle, drooping flowers are more of a warning sign than a sign of irreparable damage. If you take the necessary measures immediately, the plants will recover quite quickly. But what could be the reason if the snow rose hangs its “head”?

Cold periods with frost

Christmas roses are frost hardy and very so. What is particularly impressive is the fact that they not only withstand the cold, but also have the strength to bloom. Nevertheless, frost can affect them a little, but don't worry - not in the sense that they will suffer any damage. It's completely normal if they suddenly appear limp at temperatures below zero. It will stay that way for now until the temperatures rise again. Then they stand up again and present their flower beauty in all its glory again.

So if you thought that your Christmas rose was irretrievably frozen, we can reassure you. The flower doesn't give up so easily.Find out more hereon the subject.

A notice:The flowers also begin to droop as their flowering phase comes to an end. If this bothers you visually, you can simply cut off spent flowers.

Lack of water makes the flower weak

Has there been no cold spell recently and that's why the hanging flowers can't come? Then it might be due to lack of water. In winter you should be more careful with watering - too much water is harmful for plants that are in the dormant phase and those that overwinter outside (even those that are in their flowering phase like the Christmas rose) are only watered when There is currently no frost phase. So you want to avoid both waterlogging and freezing of the wet potting soil.

And that can lead to you watering too infrequently out of sheer caution. Fortunately, this can be quickly recognized in plants that do not lose their leaves in winter or that even bloom because they leave these parts of the plant hanging. So maybe your Christmas rose is just thirsty. You can solve the problem by watering them as quickly as possible. But be careful: pay attention to appropriate temperatures! If the temperatures are below zero, either wait until they pass. If you don't want to wait that long, you can temporarily place the pot in a cool winter quarters where it will not freeze after watering.

Waterlogging – the hidden evil in plant care

Unfortunately, you often only notice this problem when it is almost (or completely) too late. The Christmas rose also leaves its flowers hanging when theRoots rot. If you haven't noticed any other problems, that could be the problem. If you water too often, waterlogging will occur, which will inevitably lead to root rot. This happens particularly quickly in winter because it doesn't evaporate as quickly as in summer. If this is the case, you should act quickly before the entire root ball is affected.

  • Get the plant out of the ground.
  • Use clean scissors to cut off the affected roots.
  • Replant the Christmas rose. But use new soil.
  • From now on, water in appropriate quantities. The soil should be moist but not wet. Before watering the plant, check whether the top layer of soil is dry.

A lack of nutrients in potted snow roses

If you have just bought your Christmas rose, this cause can actually be ruled out because it should have been adequately supplied by the dealer beforehand and a new supply of nutrients will not be necessary until spring. However, if you have already had the flower for some time, it could well be that you have not cared for it adequately. Try to think back: Did the snow rose have more and stronger flowers last time?

There is nothing you can do about it now, but you can prevent this from happening in the future by fertilizing every spring after the flowering period (March or April) with an organic fertilizer that also contains lime. Compost is also very suitable. After the harsh winter and flowering period, the plant absolutely needs this to recover and gather new strength. To ensure lush flowering, fertilize again in June or July.

The Christmas rose leaves its flowers drooping when exposed to diseases and pests

If you overwinter the Christmas roses in pots outside, pests are unlikely in the winter. However, infestation is possible indoors. However, when the weather is right, diseases can occur (including the root rot mentioned above). The Christmas rose drops its flowers when it is sick or has been attacked, but at some point other symptoms also appear, such as discolored leaves and spots. Pests can be seen with the naked eye. Act quickly to save the Christmas rose.
