Creating a herb garden at home – what you should consider

Do you like using different herbs when cooking? Have you already thought about a small herb garden in your kitchen? Yes? Great! Today's article is about design ideas that will most likely interest you. How can you create your own herb garden at home? The design can be really quite simple, you just need a few tin cans together in a cake tin with some river pebbles in between for a better look. Or maybe you want something fancier? Then design a proper clay and ceramic garden with lots of different pots for the different herbs you want to grow and give the plants enough light, even more than each one gets naturally. No matter how many or how few herbs you have, growing your own herb garden can help you have something fresh in the kitchen through the winter months and also add lots of great flavors in the cooking area. When designing your inner herb garden, there are a few important things to consider before you take the first step.

Which herbs?

Questions you need to ask yourself before starting
You should first list the herbs that you like to use in cooking and that you want to try. Then you should find out which ones grow in low light conditions. For example, mint and chives grow well in low light and cooler temperatures. Basil and thyme require more light and require more care. Do you know how much time you want to spend in your kitchen herb garden? You should also calculate this in advance before deciding what you will grow. If you have a lot of one type of herb there, you might care for two or three other plants.

Instructions

Choose the right place at home
Most herbs will require about six hours of daylight, so choose the right location for yours accordinglyGarden at home. If you have a window sill that gets the sun most of the day and you just want to grow a few herbs, you just have the perfect spot. If you want to grow more herbs, you can place a table in front of the window to put the plants there.

Select the container
Your container can be very simple, for example you can use some tin cans on a baking tray, but you should put some gravel in between for better drainage. Or there may be a container specifically built for this purpose with many different containers for your herbs in it. Look around the house and you might find a suitable container for your herb garden at home. Otherwise, go to your local garden supply store and find what you need and want. If you want to grow chives or peppermint, you must note in advance that these herbs prefer to grow in individual containers. These plants tend to take up the entire container, excluding all others. Of course, you also have your choice here: there are other plants that can grow quite well together in one container. This will definitely make sure your containers have good drainage.

Record everything in advance
Make your design at an appropriate scale to ensure you can neatly place everything you want. Hopefully your herbs will be in good hands in this spot that you have chosen especially for them. If you make a good design of your herb garden in advance, you will be able to identify and correct certain problems in a timely manner. You can also get the containers and place them in their spots to see if everything fits properly.

Rotate the herbs daily
Every day you should rotate your herb plants so that each of them grows symmetrically. If you leave them the same way, they will grow better in the direction of the light, that is, they will grow crooked. Rotating every day will help you avoid this. But when designing your herb garden, consider extra space for rotating pots or containers. So, you need that extra space to rotate the plants or lift them out of the area, turn the plants over and only then put the plants back down.

An herb garden design project can be really fun. Beforehand, consider what plants you want to grow, how much light and space those plants need, and whether the plants need to be grown together or grown separately. Then make your own plan. Get the containers that have good drainage, buy the plants or seeds, plant them and you will soon be rewarded for your efforts. When cooking, you will always have fresh herbs on hand so you can prepare delicious meals for your family and friends. We hope you enjoy cooking with your own herbs from the garden in your kitchen!
