If you want to create a touch of Mediterranean feeling on your balcony and/or terrace, you won't be able to avoid shrubs and trees such as citrus plants, oleander or bougainvillea. The olive tree has also become a real favorite. Do you know someone who has a plant like this and would like to propagate it for yourself? Or maybe you would like to grow a few more from your own plant? How exactly can you propagate the olive tree?
There are several variants, all of which can be carried out by beginners. In fact, it's easier than you might think, provided you choose the right time.
Propagate olive trees: These are your options
How can I propagate an olive tree?
Depending on how much patience you can invest, you have two options to choose from for propagating the olive tree: either you use a core (if you don't have a plant yet, for example) or you use the branches that are left over as waste when the tree is cut remain. This is handy if you already have a plant.
When and how to cut the olive tree correctlyfind out here.
Propagate olive tree with seeds
Whether organic olives or not plays a secondary role, because in our latitudes and the conditions that we can offer the olive trees, they probably won't produce any fruit that you will eat later anyway. If you still want to be on the safe side, just use Bioware.
A notice:Germination is not 100 percent certain. So that your effort doesn't go to waste, it's worth planting several olive pits at once.
- Cut open a fruit and remove the core.
- Remove pulp from olive pit.
- Prepare a glass of lukewarm water and place the kernel in it to soak.
- Optionally, you can help the olive stone germinate. To do this, sand the hard outer shell a little or even score it. This makes it easier for the seedling to crack them.
- After about 24 hours of soaking, you can start planting. Use normal potting soil and a small pot. Initially the seedling does not require much space.
- Plant the core correctly! He is comingnotlying down, but upright in the ground. If you look closer, you'll notice that it's a little pointier on one side. This very tip should still look a little out of the ground.
- Water the substrate once thoroughly to moisten it all over, but allow the water to drain well.
- Now place the pot in a bright place. The windowsill is ideal, but the sun should not shine directly on the pot.
- It should be warm enough: the aim is between 20 and 25 degrees. So a heated, bright room is perfect.
- Make sure that the substrate never dries out, but is also not soaking wet. Moderate humidity is important so that the kernel can germinate.
From now on there is nothing to do but wait (and of course water regularly) because germination can take a few weeks. Then continue to care for the plant in the same way, because the pot is sufficient for now. The olive plant feels comfortable there as long as the roots have enough space. As soon as the cultivation pot is well filled with roots, it is repotted.
Use cuttings
If you propagate the olive tree through cuttings, the advantage is that your newplantlets have a growth advantagewill have. This can be quite useful for a slow-growing specimen like the olive. It is important that you not only use the right branches if you want to grow an olive tree yourself, but also care for them properly afterwards:
- You can use the cut branchesduring regular pruninguse, or cut off a few branches specifically for propagation.
- It is best to use young branches. The less woody they are, the easier it is for roots to break through.
- Aim for a length of 10 to 15 cm, although it is very important that there are a few eyes on this piece.
- Pluck off the leaves.
- Place the olive branches in water or plant them directly in a pot with potting soil.
- Both the glass and the pot are then placed in a bright and warm place (see core method) to create ideal conditions in which the plant parts can develop roots.
Again, you have no choice but to wait. Change the water in the glass every day or two and, as with the olive pit, always keep the soil in the pot moist.
The first sign that olive tree propagation is successful is leaves forming on the branch. A short time later you should be able to see roots on the future olive tree. The first roots appear in the form of white dots on the branch.
