The winter flowers bloom until the end of April
The winter flower (Chimonanthus praecox) is a shrub of the genus Chimonanthus and belongs to the Calycanthaceae family. It is native to China, where it grows in forests at high altitudes. The plant blooms from late December to March-April and grows up to 4 meters tall. Its leaves are deciduous, shiny and dark green. The flowers appear on last year's branches. They are yellow, with crimson inner petals. The plant has a pleasant honey scent.
It's a pretty oneeasy to care for plant. Minimal pruning is required. In late spring, remove crossing, dead or diseased branches and place a generous layer of mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
Winter-flowering trees: witch hazel Diane
In February the flowers of the witch hazel Diane (Hamamelis japonica) burst open. It comes from Japan and is similar to hairy witch hazel, but has star-shaped hairs and upright flowers. The Japanese witch hazel is a shrub that grows up to 4-5 m high.
These plants prefer deep, moist and nutrient-rich soil. When designing the garden, it is advisable to give them a place with good to medium sunlight. Its flowering period is preceded by beautiful flowers in yellow and red with ruffled flowers, also called witch hazel. Witch hazel is relatively easy to cultivate and is rarely affected by diseases and pests.
Winter heather is hardy and long-lasting
More pretty trees,that bloom in winter. Winter heather (Erica Carnea) is a low, evergreen subshrub. The root system is bearded, the shoots are woody, the young branches are bare and angular. The leaves are needle-shaped, the flowers are small and tubular, the fruits are small dry drupes. The homeland of this beautiful plant is southern and central Europe. Today it is widely used in ornamental horticulture and hundreds of varieties have been bred. A perfect onehardy plant.
Plant winter heather in a sunny spot or in light partial shade, especially if the summer is hot. The soil should be loose, slightly acidic to normal, fresh. It should not be over-drained or over-watered. When planting a new plant, you should initially water more often until it begins to grow and form new roots. After flowering, cut back the tips of the flowering shoots and give the bush a spherical shape. Erica grows slowly, but when planted in the right place it has a very long lifespan.
Daphne blooms in the cold months
Daphne (Daphne Mezereum) is a beautifully flowering shrub that grows up to 1.5 m tall. The soft leaves are arranged spirally on the stems. The flowers appear on the bare stems in early spring, before the leaves appear. From February to April you can enjoy the delicate flowers in the garden. They have a pink or light purple (rarely white), strongly scented corolla of flowers. The fruits are bright red. Note that the fruits are poisonous to humans.
Daphne thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained clay, sand or limestone soil and prefers a neutral pH. Mulch the soil to keep moisture even.
Enjoy the exotic tenderness of winter jasmine
Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) is an evergreen, fast-growing shrub with attractive foliage and yellow, fragrant flowers. The shrub reaches a height of 3 m. Suitable for fortifying and greening dry slopes, hedges and borders. It is suitable for planting along fences and spreads beautifully along walls.
This is an easy plant to care for. Tolerates shade but does better in full sun. It is neither demanding on the soil nor on moisture. She prefers south facing. The flowering shoots must be thinned out regularly if the plant becomes very dense.
Winter Flowering Shrubs: Winter Scented Viburnum
The winter scented viburnum (Viburnum Bod. Charles Lamont) blooms in late winter. The pale pink flowers have a pleasant scent and the plant is completely hardy. An easy-care shrub with a truly eye-catching display of flowers that will make the winter garden shine. The plant blooms from November to March with pink and white flowers that brighten up a bed.
Viburnum tolerates shade. The shrub can reach a height of 2 to 3 m with a spread of 2 m. A slight pruning in spring, immediately after flowering, thickens its shape. It is easy to grow, thrives in all types of soil and is resistant to harmful insects.
