Get dull glasses clear again: Which home remedies ensure shine?
Taking a glass you've just washed out of the dishwasher only to find that it looks milky and dull can be very frustrating. A further rinse usually does not solve the problem and drinking from a cloudy glass can be very unpleasant. Read on to learn what causes white glasses and what you can do about it.
Why do glasses become milky?
Glasses become milky usually due to limescale deposits or corrosion of the glass. While glass corrosion unfortunately cannot be removed and can only be slowed down, there are some helpful tips you can use to clean limescale deposits. These are caused by hard water, whose high mineral content leads to deposits, which you often have to contend with in the bathroom and kitchen. Today we'll explain how you can get your milky glasses and other cloudy glass items sparkling clean again.
Soak in vinegar
The easiest and most effective method is to soak the glasses in white vinegar, as the acidic home remedy can dissolve minerals. It is therefore particularly important that the vinegar is warm.
- Start by filling the sink with warm water and placing a bottle of white vinegar in it to warm it up.
- Then fill a large bowl with the warm vinegar, place the jars in the liquid and let them soak for an hour.
- Then scrub each glass with a silicone sponge to avoid scratches and rinse under warm running water. If the jar still looks cloudy, place it in the vinegar for another 30 minutes.
- Dry them immediately with a lint-free cloth to prevent new stains from the hard water.
Tipp:However, if stubborn stains cannot be removed, gently rub them with a small dab of baking soda on your fingertip. Be sure to act very carefully to avoid scratching and add a few drops of water if desired to form a paste.
Clear dull glasses again with lemon
Lemon juice is also perfect for removing limescale and has another advantage over vinegar - it leaves a fresh and pleasant aroma.
You can either mix 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with 250ml of water in a bowl and let the glasses soak in the solution for 10 minutes, or grate a lemon half directly into the glass. Then simply rinse thoroughly.
Another method is to cut a lemon in half, place it in the dish rack, and run the dishwasher. Do not use detergent so that the citrus fruit can dissolve the limescale.

Avoid white drinking glasses
Even if you continue to clean your drinking glasses in the dishwasher, there are some steps you can take to prevent limescale build-up.
- Limescale deposits appear on drinking glasses if hard water is not softened. Determine the water hardness in your region using test strips and choose the appropriate softening setting for your dishwasher.
- Experiment with the amount of dishwashing detergent. Try more or less to find the right amount. Make sure you use a high quality rinse aid.
- Wash glasses at a water temperature below 60°C.
- Clean the dishwasherregularly to avoid mineral deposits.
