Some are well known, while others sound a bit strange or even funny. Here we have summarized the most effective of them:
- The good old fly swatter – a bit brutal, but very effective. If you don't have one at hand, you can use a cloth, a rolled-up newspaper or a slipper (be careful with wall paint!)
- Turn on the vacuum cleaner and go hunting for mosquitoes. However, this method may not be very popular with the neighbors downstairs, especially in the middle of the night.
- Fragrance lamp orEssential oil diffusersuch as lemongrass or lemon eucalyptus and turn it on. This means that the insects won't come too close to you and you can enjoy a restful sleep without annoying buzzing and mosquito bites.
This is how you can prevent mosquitoes in your room
There is no better protection than prevention. The best thing you can do is to keep the mosquitoes out of your room in the first place. To do this, install fly screens in the window to protect against insects or avoid opening the windows and doors in the evening. If the mosquitoes still find a way, the following protective products and methods will help.
- Fill your apartment and especially the bedroom with houseplants, keep the mosquitoes away. If you place these on the windowsill then the mosquitoes will most likely fly past your window. Another option is offered by carnivorous plants that deal with the insects on their behalf.
- Sleep under a mosquito net. Beds with canopies not only look beautiful, but are also practical, especially in summer. This means that the pests can no longer disturb your sleep.
- Place a fan next to the bed. It keeps you cool during warm summer nights and distracts mosquitoes from their target.
- Insert an anti-mosquito plug into the socket. This is a biocide vaporizer that is harmless to humans. Nevertheless, it is not advisable to use mosquito plugs in children's rooms.
- Drive away mosquitoes from the bedroom with ultrasonic devices. These prove to be very effective, but usually also drive away beneficial insects.
- Build a mosquito trap using a cut-off PET bottle, brown sugar, yeast and water. This immediately attracts the mosquitoes and you can continue to sleep peacefully.
Tips on how to find mosquitoes in the room
The most active time for mosquitoes is the lukewarm evening hours and early night. The high temperatures during the day can be fatal for the little pests, so they look for a cool hiding place where they sleep during the day. If you are sure that there are mosquitoes in the room, then during the day you can probably find them in the corners of walls and ceilings, as well as between, under or behind furniture.
But a mosquito in the room is a guarantee for a sleepless night. At least until you find her. The easiest thing to do if you hear a mosquito at night would be to turn on the lamp. If the mosquito has not found a good hiding place, it will show itself.
The following two methods can also help you find the annoying mosquito faster.
The flashlight method
Turn on a flashlight when you hear the telltale buzzing sound. Aim the flashlight directly at the wall so that the beam travels in a straight line across the wall. Pay close attention to any shadows. If the mosquito is on the wall, its shadow will be very large. (This is where physics comes into play.) You can also rotate the flashlight in all directions until you find the mosquito.
The screen method
For this method you need a smartphone or tablet. You don't even have to get out of bed to do this. So stay lying on your back in bed with your tablet or phone on your chest with the screen on and very bright (tablets work best here). If you have a light or white bed sheet, bend your knees and lift them so that the sheet is visible when you look straight ahead. This makes the mosquito more visible. Think of your tray as the stage and your folded sheet as the backdrop. Now take a deep breath and exhale towards the tablet on your chest. The carbon dioxide from your breath, in addition to the light, becomes theattract mosquito. Now play the waiting game. The mosquito will find its way to you and may even land directly on the tablet. Then it's your turn.
