Unicorn cake made from cupcakes – instructions
You can also create an impressive and original unicorn cake from several muffins and cream. The instructions for this are very simple. For this attractive version of the unicorn cake you need muffins and buttercream or any other frosting. The number of muffins can vary depending on whether you want to recreate a whole unicorn figure or just the unicorn head. You will need around 25-30 muffins for the head and around 40-45 for the figure. First, place the cooled muffins together on a non-slip surface in the desired shape. Prepare the cream. For example, you can get a fluffy and delicious topping from 300 g of powdered sugar, 300 g of cream cheese, 400 g of mascarpone, 500 g of butter and the pulp of a vanilla pod.
Then distribute the cream among the muffins using an ice cream scoop, leaving a third of the cream remaining. You will need these later for the mane. Spread the buttercream evenly and model the head, mouth and nostrils as desired. Now you can devote yourself to the unicorn cake decoration and color the remaining cream in blue, turquoise, pink and purple. Spray the mane in several layers. This gives the unicorn a lush and beautiful mane. Paint the eye or eyelashes with chocolate or make them from fontant paste. All you have to do is make the horn and ears and the muffin cake is ready! If desired, you can sprinkle colorful beads, stars or glitter powder over it. Now you can pull the cupcakes apart and enjoy them!

Pummeleinhorn cake with figure
Should the unicorn cake not only be beautiful but also funny? Then you can take advantage of a new trend and get a few guaranteed laughs. This refers to the chubby unicorn, which can be depicted in a variety of ways, but is usually intended to give the impression that it has nibbled on the cake and then dozed off on the cake plate when it was fully eaten or on the cake itself. Not only does it sound fun, it looks like it too. In principle, you can also make a Pummeleinhorn cake yourself. You can use the same recipes for this as for the normal unicorn cake. We have already provided a selection above.
The more complicated step is the Pummeleinhorn cake figure. This only really looks effective when it is designed in 3D format. But with a little effort and will, you can do this yourself. The following video can help you, in which everything is shown step by step, so that even beginners can have success and proudly use their chubby unicorn as a cake decoration.
For the Pummeleinhorn cake decoration, as with the normal variants, you need white fondant, as well as fondant in several pastel colors. Pink, green, light blue and yellow are perfect, but you can also choose other shades and color the white fondant as you wish. You will also need a black edible marker, a brush and toothpicks and a few tools to help you shape. If you don't have the tools shown in the video at home, you don't need to buy any extra for this one figure. Instead, improvise and find alternative household items. But if you would like to make different motif cakes with 3D figures yourself more often in the future, it is of course worth investing in the right tools. Now let's get to the instructions for the chubby unicorn:
- First, form the white fondant into a large ball by rolling it back and forth on the table with your hand. Once it is nice and smooth on all sides, make it into an egg shape. Then press the smaller side in a little so that it becomes flatter. This is, so to speak, the chest of the unicorn and the larger and more bulbous side is the belly.
- Next you need two balls of the same size, which must be smaller than the first. Form the first one into a cone and cut the larger end off at an angle. You now have the first hind leg, which you can stick to your body with water. Repeat the whole thing with the second ball to make the second leg.
- Now, of course, you also need the front legs for the chubby unicorn. To do this, form two balls again, this time slightly smaller than the previous ones. Then turn the balls into skittles again. The smaller end forms the shoulder. Put the front legs aside for now.
- Again, you'll need a larger ball for the head. Use your hands to form an egg shape again and use it to make a horse's head, as shown in the video. There are also nostrils and a mouth. Make a tongue out of a small piece of pink fondant and put it in your mouth.
- Use the black marker pen to draw the closed eyes while using a brush to dab a little pink powdered food coloring onto the cheeks. Using a toothpick, pin the head to the body. Also add a little water for gluing. Better safe than sorry.
- Now make the mane with fondant in different bright colors. Yellow fondant is again used to shape the hooves (small discs) and the horn. If you want, you can also add a little gold shimmer to these elements.
- The hooves are now glued to the legs, the front legs to the body and the horn to the forehead. With a small piece of beige or brown fondant you can also simulate a piece of cake, as if the unicorn had eaten the cake. Alternatively, you can also cut the cake right next to the unicorn at the end (as if the unicorn had eaten it) and put a little of the dough on a hoof. You can also add a belly button. Now all that's left is to decorate the cake with fondant or cream and add the pummel unicorn.
Make your own Pummeleinhorn as a cake topper
The full unicorn is also suitable as a cake topper in 2D format. This will also look very funny and bring smiles to faces. You can make this type of pummel unicorn for the cake like the first variant for the normal unicorn in the first instructions, using a template that you then use to cut out the individual elements from the fondant.
Buy unicorn cake decorations
And if you don't have the desire or time to tinker with fondant or are simply not satisfied with your result after several attempts, you can fortunately also use a ready-made model that you can buy. Such figures can often be specially made in the pastry shop. Just ask whether this service is offered in your area.
