Edible decorations for Halloween: How you can make a horror house yourself

At Christmas it's the gingerbread house, for scary night you can conjure up a similar, dark version. It's nothing new to create edible Halloween decorations from sausages, pasta and vegetables for the party buffet. But a special eye-catcher would be a cool horror house for which you can make the individual elements yourself. How exactly is it done?

You don't have to be a baking professional to make a spooky cake house. It doesn't necessarily have to be eaten if it's too bad for you. But you shouldn't necessarily keep it until next year.

If you would like to make such a table decoration yourself for Halloween, first prepare the dough from which you will make the “walls” for itfuture horror housebake. Then cut the elements and assemble everything. And it all works like this:

Ingredients for the horror house for the horror festival

  • 225 g Butter
  • 100 g muscovado sugar + 2 tbsp (this type of sugar creates a darker dough)
  • 100g sugar
  • 1 No
  • 1 TL Vanilleextrakt
  • 240 g Flour
  • 100 g dark cocoa powder (or possibly more)
  • 1 pinch of salt

So that you can make the simple Halloween decoration yourself, you need to prepare the cookie elements:

  • First mix the butter with the sugar using a hand mixer. Avoid mixing for too long as the pastry could become more brittle and fall apart later.
  • Add the egg and vanilla.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the flour with the cocoa and salt.
  • Add the butter mixture and stir into a smooth dough. There should be no pieces of butter left.
  • If the dough is too dry and crumbly, you can add a tablespoon of ice water or one or two more if necessary. Conversely, if it is too sticky, add more cocoa.
  • Place the dough between two sheets of baking paper and roll it out.
  • Let the dough rest for half an hour.
  • Take any template for the horror house (for example those for the classic gingerbread houses or one of our templates), cut it out and place it on the rolled out dough to trace the outline with a knife or pizza roller. You can also work freehand.
  • You can cut out/shape smaller elements such as trees, skeletons or just cookies from the leftover dough.
  • Place the elements on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 175 degrees.
  • Before you make the edible decorations for Halloween, let everything cool down thoroughly.

  • Then prepare icing to glue each element together. Melted chocolate is also suitable.
  • You can apply the “glue” using a piping bag.
  • Assemble the scary house directly on a suitable surface, for example on a cardboard base or a cake plate.
  • With frosting (also preferably homemade) that you color in appropriate Halloween colors, you can decorate the finished house.
  • Cut out necessary elements such as windows and doors from yellow fondant. Moisten the back a little so that you can stick it in place.
