Preparing omelets is a challenge for many people. Sometimes it falls apart, sometimes it sticks to the pan too much. Alternative preparation options such as the oven are a welcome thing. But do you already know the variant with a plastic bag? Yes, you can make the perfect omelette in a freezer bag and we would like to explain to you exactly how it works.
How do you make an omelet in a freezer bag?
Leave the panand the baking trayin the cupboard and take out a pot instead. Then you need a bag and cooking water and you can get started with any omelet recipe. After preparing the ingredients and working them together, how do you go about making the omelette in the freezer bag?
- Bring the water to the boil in the pot. There should be enough so that the contents of the bag float as completely as possible in the water, but not too much as it could spill over after the bag is added.
- While the water is boiling, you can prepare the omelette. To do this, just put the eggs in the bag, close it tightly and shake and turn it so that the eggs mix well.
- Open the bag again and add any other ingredients you want, including spices. Mix well again with the bag sealed.
- Try to get as much air out of the bag as possible.
- As soon as the water boils, prepare the omelet in a water bath. Simply place the bag inside with the closure facing up. From now on, move the bag as little as possible so that the texture of an omelette is created and not scrambled eggs.
- After about 15 minutes, the egg dish is ready and can be placed directly on a plate.
Recipe idea for the egg dish in a bag with ham and cheese
The following recipe is just an example and can be modified as desired. If you don't like onions, you can simply leave them out or use mushrooms instead. In addition to ham, you can also use diced bacon (you can fry them well beforehand) or other types of sausage, as well as spinach, peas, peppers, parsley or whatever else you like.
For 2 people:
- 4 Owner
- 2 spring onions
- 4 tbsp cheese, grated
- 1 tbsp frozen corn or canned
- 1 tbsp ham, diced
- pepper and salt
As explained above, start with the eggs and then add the remaining ingredients. You can prepare both portions in one freezer bag or use a separate one per person.
Omelette in a freezer bag – dangerous or not?
Even if you use BPA-free plastic, cooking in plastic containers, including bags of this type, always releases certain amounts of harmful chemicals. Heating the material in particular contributes to this. For this reason, you should avoid using this cooking method too often (or heating food in plastic at all). Although there is no concern for a camping trip or as an exception for a quick breakfast, it can have long-term effects on your health.
