Concrete worktop – 30 ideas for a new surface in the kitchen

Concrete is a current and frequently preferred material by interior architects and designers worldwide. Thanks to a high proportion of cement and plastic, it is very stable and is particularly suitable for work surfaces. A concrete slab looks modern and stylish in combination with simple, plain furniture.

Concrete is naturally very hard and robust, but still open-pored, which is why sealing is necessary. An epoxy coating will ensure a long-lasting finish and would be ideal for heavy use. Alternatively, there are acrylic-based concrete sealants. Before sealing, all unevenness, as well as dust and dirt, should be carefully removed. Cracks and holes are filled. The surface should be completely dry. Strictly follow the sealant's instructions.

For a type of sink, look for panels that have a matt, smooth surface, preferably veneer. Fill the joints and insulate with a greasy agent (oil also works).

Use battens to determine the shape and size of the desired panel. Use a large MDF board with a flat surface as a base and fix the parts on top with screws.

To pour concrete you need formwork and round steel mesh. In specialist shops you will find special plastic ones suitable for this purpose, also suitable for smaller areas.

Tapping and shaking carefully will help ensure that the fresh concrete is evenly divided. Use a board to divide the mixture properly. Spirit level will be of use.

The concrete slab is covered with a plastic film to prevent it from drying out quickly. After two days, the file is removed and the plate is carefully moistened with a damp sponge. This prevents any possible cracking.

Five days after watering, the formwork can be removed, but the board should continue to be moistened and the film left on it.

After two weeks the worktop is ready for use. Finally it is sealed with an epoxy resin.
