Make your own ball out of succulents: Beautiful decorations can be so easy!

Be honest: have you ever seen such a beautiful plant decoration? If you, like me, are a real succulent fan, you probably fell in love with this idea straight away. How can you make a succulent ball yourself?

The good news is (actually there's only good news here): It's incredibly easy to make your own succulent ball and it's also a lot of fun. If you want, you can also make a few copies as a gift for your friends or relatives.

If you would like to make a ball of succulents yourself, there are various options available to you. Either you use:

  • a wire frame that can be opened and filled with soil or
  • They tie moss together into balls with yarn

In both cases, you can later use the finished hanging decoration as you wish for the garden, terrace or balcony, provided that the plants get enough sun, because they need a lot of it.

Which types of succulents are suitable?

In general, you actually have freedom of choice as long as you find the right location for you. There are only two species that thrive in the shade. For everyone else, it's important to provide a place in the sun.

Once you have chosen suitable plant species, you can combine them as you wish. A colorful mix of different succulents looks just as great as a version made up of just one species.

How to make the ball out of succulents yourself

It doesn't take much effort to make a ball yourself out of succulents, but you should allow for some time.

For the variant with potting soil and wire frame

  • If you should hang up the modern decoration with succulents later, you should attach a hook or a chain/rope now.
  • Then begin to gradually fill the wire ball with soil. This is easier if the potting soil is moist.
  • Do this until no metal is visible and the inner earth is solid.
  • Once the globe is finished, cut the tips of the succulents.
  • Tweezers can help you push the tips of the shoots into the soil more easily without breaking them and also get them closer together.
  • Plant the ball from all sides. The ball of succulents is ready.

If you want to make a ball of succulents yourself out of moss

  • Submerge peat moss in water to allow it to absorb in peace.
  • Meanwhile, place potting soil on a piece of paper towel, gather it all together, and tie wire or twine around it to hold it all together.
  • Now you can also use wire to attach a chain or hook for later hanging.
  • Then take the moss and spread a thick layer in front of you.
  • Place the paper ball on top and begin to gently lift the moss up the sides.
  • Tie everything together with twine.
  • Use a stick to poke holes in the ball, whereupon you can arrange the prepared succulents inside.

You don't have to plant the entire ball. Bare spots also look interesting and will be covered by growing plants over time. If you want, you can also design just the top or bottom of the plant ball with succulents. It's your summer decoration, do whatever you want with it!
