Macrame shopping bag – free instructions for beginners
A macrame mesh bag is pretty to look at and very useful, especially for shopping. A wide variety of products can be transported in it without the risk of it tearing like plastic bags. And the best thing is that it can be used over and over again, of courseprotects the environment. You will need 4mm thick macrame yarn (or thinner if you prefer) as well as scissors and a ruler or tape measure. Then you can get started and make your own macrame bag.
Weave the handles for the macrame bag
First you can make two handles for the macrame bag or the net yourself. To do this, simply braid the yarn like a braid. The easiest way to do this is to tape the ends to a table or place a heavy object on top. If you have braided two handles, you can tie the two ends of each rope together using a wrap knot.
To do this, take a small piece of rope, form a loop at one end and place the ends of the handle on the loop. Then wrap the longer end of the loop around the two ends of the handle in the direction of the loop. Then put the remaining thread through the remaining loop, whereupon you pull the end of the yarn on the other side so that the loop is tightened. Repeat with the other handle of the macrame bag.
Alternative to the braided handle
Tipp: Instead of braiding handles, you can also use finished rings made of wood or plastic and then tie the macrame bag to them. Or just choose a different design that is a little more interesting than the braided one. For example, how about the following variant (rib knot):
Macrame bag instructions
You can now tie the macrame bag to the handles. It is particularly easy to work if you pull the handles over a bar and then place the bar slightly elevated (e.g. between two chair backs). For a bag measuring 42 x 23 cm (without handle) you need 14 cords with a length of 2 meters per handle. But of course you can also use more and/or longer cords if you need a larger shopping bag.
You then tie the prepared pieces of yarn to the handles using the so-called lark's head knot. To do this, choose the part of the handles with the wrap knots in order to conceal them at the same time. To make this type of knot, take a piece of yarn, fold it over in the middle, place the resulting loop around the handle and pull the two hanging ends through the loop. Then you can make the macrame bag:
The bag initially consists of simple cross knots, which are knotted from four strands each. You can see how to do this in the instructions aboveKnots madebecomes. Make three rows of these knots. Then you need to connect the two sides of the bag you received. Again, use the square knot for this. Take the last two strands on each side of the handles and tie three rows of square knots like you just did.
The rest of the macrame bag is made even simpler: tie cross knots again at a small distance from the three rows. Then leave the same distance again and add more square knots, but this time offset. To do this, always take the two right strands from one knot and the two left ones from the next together. Continue like this until you reach the bottom or have reached the desired bag length.
Macrame bag DIY – Close the bottom of the bag
Tie three rows of square knots again like you did at the beginning of the bag. Then you can take the bag off the rack and place it in front of you. Now knot two strands on one side of the bag with the two opposite ones on the other side of the bag. Tie double knots to create a durable bag bottom. Trim off the excess ends. You can now turn the macrame bag inside out or leave it as is and also fix the end knots with spray adhesive.
Macrame handbag – instructions
Would you rather have one insteadMake your own handbag? No problem! You can use the same instructions and simply tie the knots closer together to make the macrame bag opaque. The macrame handbag DIY becomes particularly easy if, as already mentioned, you use ready-made rings to which you knot the actual bags.
Homemade bucket bag for women
Would you like some peppy fringes too? For example, you can get a macrame bag with fringes by not cutting off the knotted ends of the bag described above, but only shortening them if necessary and then combing the yarn apart with a fine-toothed comb.
If you want, you can of course also try out interesting knotting patterns if the square knot design seems a little too boring for you. There are numerous video tutorials online that you can use for this purpose.
Instructions for macrame bags – make your own clutch bags
From the same square knots as for thisMake macrame netShe also has such a clutch. Stretch a long piece of yarn and tie the desired number of pieces of yarn to it using the lark's head knot (depending on how wide you want the macrame bag to be). These should be around 4 meters long.
Then tie many rows of square knots until you reach the desired bag size. You can now and then fold over the knotted strip to check how high the clutch has already become.
Once you are happy with the length, you can taper the knot pattern towards the bottom. Then knot a diagonal half hitch on both sides and from top to bottom or from the outside to the middle. Leave a small gap from the tip and then tie four square knots. Of the four hanging strands of this row of knots, take the middle two and push them through from above - between the strands where you left a space.
Pull the strands tight so that you create a large knot that looks like a button. Use the two outer strands that you have not just pulled through to secure the large knot with a cross knot. Now tie the same knot several times along the diagonal, then tie the diagonal half-twist again on both sides. Take everything off the rack and place it in front of you. You can now cut off the excess ends along the diagonal to the desired fringe length and comb through.
Sew the clutch together
Fold the long side over to the beginning of the diagonal. Thread the yarn that you previously used for hanging through a large crochet hook and sew the two layers of the macrame bag, always passing them through the stitches (just like when you crochet bags and then sew them together). Once you get to the bottom of the corner, insert the needle into the inside of the bag and knot the end. This way the node will not be visible. Trim off the excess and repeat on the other side. The macrame bag with fringes is now ready and can be used. You can also add a strap for hanging around your neck, for example by tying yarn with the rib knot (very popular for bracelets) to a ring with a carabiner.
Make your own macrame bag - instructions for a macrame yoga bag
As for the clutch, string up a piece of rope. Then you can tie the pieces of yarn for the bag onto it. Do not pull this too tight as the opening there should be able to be closed later. Now tie any pattern you like. A simple cross-knot design like for the shopping bag is completely sufficient. You should end up with a hose, the bottom end of which you simply tie. The top opening remains openthe yoga matto be able to push in. Then pull on the ends of the rope (shorten it if necessary) that you used to stretch it to close the macrame bag and tie a bow.
Now you can make a strap like you did for the clutch. Instead of a whole bag, you can simply tie straps to rings and then tie them around the rolled up mat.
