What is Reverse Balayage?
BalayageEvery hairstyle junkie knows this by now. When it comes to hair coloring techniques, the method has been the undisputed number one for years! We're not surprised, because the flowing highlights look incredibly elegant and ensure a natural color result. Okay, but what is reverse balayage? Translated from English, “reverse” means something like “the other way around” and that pretty much explains everything. The new hair trend for fall 2021 works the other way around.
In contrast to classic balayage, reverse balayage does not create highlights, but rather the so-called lowlights. The hairline remains light and the tips and lengths are streaked with darker strands. To create the most natural look possible, reverse balayage uses the same hand-painted technique. For blondes or women with light brown hair, this is pretty easy. But if you have darker hair, you first have to lighten it a few levels.
How strong the contrast should be is actually purely a matter of taste. For a smoother transition, it is recommended to dye the ends of your hair one to two tones darker than the root color. The different nuances create a chic color interplay and the result is always breathtaking.
Who is the hair trend suitable for?
And now the good news – reverse balayage suits absolutely every woman and is generally ideal for all hair types. From blonde to soft brown toBalayage in Rot– the hairstyle trend is possible in all imaginable combinations. The only important thing is that you like the color gradient and that it doesn't look too strong. However, you can't just reach for the next dark hair color - for a flattering result, the tones have to be perfectly coordinated. You should also keep in mind that the more intense and dark the hair color is, the more noticeable it is.
So if you just want a small, subtle change, you shouldn't go more than 3 shades darker. A particularly cool side effect of reverse balayage is that thin hair appears fuller and voluminous thanks to the darker tips. Don't have time to go to the hairdresser every 4 weeks? Then reverse balayage is perfect for you! The technique is extremely low-maintenance, especially for blonde and light brown hair, and guarantees us a particularly long hold.
Reverse balayage care tips
In order for our colored hair to stay shiny and healthy, we need to care for it properly. As with any hairstyle, proper care is key with reverse balayage. The hairstyle trend is fairly low-maintenance, but a weekly hair treatment should still be done. Especially in darker types, the hair structure is put under a lot of strain by lightening. To protect the ends of your hair and so that you can enjoy your new hair color for as long as possible, you should use special shampoos and care products for colored hair. Regular cuts are also an absolute must to avoid split ends and breakages.
Can you do reverse balayage yourself?
Would you like to try out the hairstyle trend but don't have the time to visit the hairdresser? No worries! Below we will explain to you how you can do reverse balayage yourself. Of course, it would be better if you had the whole thing done by a professional. But as long as you carefully follow our instructions, nothing will stand in the way of your new hairstyle.
This is what you will need:
- Hair color of your choice
- Gloves
- Cotton wool
- Kamm
- Paint brush
- Large hair clips
- Hair mask
Do reverse balayage yourself:
- First, depending on the length of your hair, pluck around 15-20 cotton strips. Make sure that they are no longer as long as the width of your new strands should be.
- Comb the hair well and create a straight horizontal division with your fingers over the ears. Pin the top section of hair up.
- Now divide the neck area again into 4 small sections and secure with hair clips.
- Gently tease the strands with the comb.
- Mix the hair color according to the package instructions and pull it into the lengths with the brush.
- Repeat the process on the other side of the strand. Make sure that you do not apply the hair color too tightly, but rather gently “sweep” it onto the hair.
- Now repeat the process with the remaining strands and place the plucked cotton strips between the strands at the roots. This ensures that the hair color does not mix.
- Then part the hair on the top of your head similarly to the nape of your neck and repeat the steps above.
- Allow the color to take effect, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and condition with the hair mask.
- It's so easy to do reverse balayage yourself!
