What is reverse pigmentation (also called repigmentation)?

A lot of people talk about how damaging bleaching hair is. Since dying bleached hair to a darker shade isn't that common, you might think it would be a piece of cake. But coloring bleached hair is harder than it seems!

The intensity of your bleached hair color determines how close you can get to your desired brown tone. Brown hair color tends to take on cooler tones (e.g. green, ash, and blue) when applied to lighter hair. For this reason, a greenish-muddy result is typical when you try to dye your hair a cool brown tone yourself.

Repigmentation – a crucial component

Hair repigmentation, also known as hair color replenishment, is a crucial part of the blonde to brunette transition. Simply put, it is a method of pre-coloring your hair to cover the pigments that are often missing from lighter brown tones. The purpose of the filler is to create a base for the dark color by penetrating deep into the hair structure. The hair color doesn't have enough depth, doesn't look good, or washes out too quickly if you don't fill in the gaps.

Copper, reds, golds and warm tones are the main players here: it is usually recommended to use a shade of green as a filler to maintain a uniform, naturally brown hair color during the treatment. Because as we know from the color wheel, green neutralizes red.

Without repigmentation from blonde to brown?

Several results are possible without repigmentation. First of all, the color will appear muted. Without the warmer undertones to reflect light, it appears flat. Then the shade will gradually disappear. After about six to eight weeks, the color will appear much lighter than when first applied.

Important tip:

  • You don't need repigmentation if you just want to go a shade darker. This technique is recommended for several shades darker.
  • Fill in two or three shades darker if you have three or fourWant to make shades darker.
  • Additionally, if you want to go darker than four shades, you'll need to apply multiple coats of paint.

Make sure your hair is clean: Changing your hair color from blonde to brown can be an exciting adventure. Before you go to the hairdresser or start coloring yourself, you should wash your hair thoroughly. Make sure your hair is completely free of any residue or anything else that could hinder color penetration while going from blonde to brown.

  1. Start with a filler shade: Bleaching is a chemical process that removes the hair's natural color. You should reapply some of the pigment with a filler color before getting the most detailed brunette hair color that looks natural. Before applying the brown dye, you or your hairstylist will color your hair with a filler color that is a warm red or gold tone. You should expect your shade to be more reddish or golden, rather than as dark as the final shade you desire. If you want a lighter result, professionals advise using a filler two shades lighter.
  2. To get the brunette or warm brown tone you desire, a visit to the salon is in order. Your hairdresser will put together an individual color recipe for you, which may also include a toner or shine. If you're coloring your hair at home, choose a pack that's one or two shades lighter than your desired shade. Bleached or lightened hair is extremely porous, so the color can stick and give the appearance that the hair is darker than you want it to be.
  3. Apply a hair glaze to finish: Just as a professional would tint bleached hair to remove excess yellow or brassy tones, your hairdresser can apply a hair glaze, sometimes called a hair gloss, after coloring to get the right look to achieve color.
