Bag trends 2019: handbags with clip closure
The classic handbag with a clip closure seems to have been completely forgotten in recent years. In 2019 it is celebrating a real revival. Ruffles, tassels, cutouts make theminto a fashion statement. The top designers sent their models onto the catwalk almost exclusively with leather bags. At Maryam Nassir Zadeh, the ivory bag was part of a sporty ensemble and was worn casually in a cross-body look. The model from Coach, which was embossed with a crocodile pattern, was extravagant. Simone Roche's little black dress matched the evening dress perfectly, had a short strap and was swung by hand.
suitcase
The traditional briefcase is getting a new look this year. Now it looks more like a jewelry box than a handbag. It's no wonder that Balmain has also integrated mirror details into the design. The handbag from the renowned fashion house also scores with two glittering handles andshines in the trend colorPowder blue. The designers at Versace chose the neon colors yellow and green. Black and white make the design suitable for everyday use and brass buckles give it a retro touch. At Chanel, the beach grass weave loosens the formal rectangular look.
Small format travel bags
A suitcase, a box or a handbag? In 2019 isthe border between the different pockets merged. Instead, the new travel bag is presented in a small format. Ideal for taking with you on the plane. Or for shopping in the city. Or as a companion to a cocktail party. Decorated with eye-catching floral patterns at Versace, in bright colors at Louis Vuitton and in exotic earthy shades at Etro – the small-format travel bag enjoys great popularity in the fashion world.
Dolce&Gabbana and Area, on the other hand, have opted for a flat shape that visually resembles a suitcase. Perfect as a briefcase. Crystals, logo prints or leather details make them a fashion statement.
Micro handbags
Small, smaller, the micro handbag. The small format bag is making a big impact this year. It can either be worn under the arm or combined with a larger handbag. Decorated with imaginative prints, crystals, beads, fringes and chains with flowers, it can also attract attention on its own. Unfortunately, it's not really practical. But bloggers and fashion-conscious women in the US have still crowned them as one of the most popular accessories.
The designers also couldn't resist their charm: We spotted the micro handbags on the catwalks of Jil Sanders, Brandon Maxwell, Thom Browne, Versace, Valentino and Giambattista Vali.
The fanny pack is experiencing a revival
The fanny pack is experiencing a revival: Last year, the belt bag became the trend surprise of the summer season. The trend bag offers practically endless styling possibilities, is space-saving and still practical. Your biggest advantage: your hands remain free. Rihanna wears it as a belt around her waist, Kendall Jenner loves the trendy crosbody look.
The small belt bag proves to be a real all-round talent and can be combined in many ways. Fendi's flat fanny pack doubled as a belt replacement and was worn over the coat. The classic Chanel handbag adorned the waist of a model in an everyday outfit of jeans, vest and blouse. At Burberry it was color coordinated with the party dress. APC showed a mini bucket bag.
Kroko-Prints
Animal prints are really big right now. Leo patterns are extremely popular and adorn skirts, dresses and blouses. If you are looking for an everyday alternative to the eye-catching print, you can choose a bag with a high-quality crocodile look. It gives every look an extravagant touch. Dries van Noten, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton have paired their brightly colored crocodile bags with a simple monochrome outfit. At Jacquemus, the green bag was tone-on-tone with the green skirt and Miu Miu opted for a classic version in black.
Combine multiple bags
This year bags have theirsbig fashion moment: They are clearly the It accessory of the 2019 winter season. And as such, they can be worn by two people. Fendi and Givenchy presented a combination of a large and a smaller bag, while Chanel presented two bags of the same size. If you like the look, you should choose the two bags so that they are similar in material, pattern and bag shape.
Models with an aluminum foil look
The next trend is futuristic. The aluminum foil look handbags come in different shapes and sizes. What they all have in common is the material they are made of: a plastic that visually resembles aluminum foil. Trendsetters wear them almost exclusively with white outfits. This means the material really comes into its own. Admittedly, the aluminum foil bag is not necessarily suitable for everyday use. But it is ideal as a loyal companion at parties or in clubs.
Handbags with multiple external compartments
What characterizes a practical bag? In contrast to last year, where shoppers were crowned as the most functional bag shape, the emphasis in 2019 is on order. The more compartments, the better the space in the bag is distributed and the faster we can find everything we have packed. Some designers have developed the concept further and have equipped their handbags with several external compartments. This means your cell phone, cash crumbs, keys, etc. are always at hand. These handbags are usually medium in size, have a short strap and are carried in the hand. When it comes to colors, the designers don't agree. Gabriela Hearst showed off a royal blue suede bag. At Fendi, the handbag in ivory and camel caused a sensation on the catwalk. Coach spiced up the outfit with a handbag in the trendy color powder blue.
With loop handle
Handbags with loop handles are everywhere: Giorgio Armani, Marc Jacobs and Adeam presented versions of the mega-trendy model. Loud colors such as pigeon blue or neon yellow and an unusual shape make them real works of art. At Armani, it was a modern take on the flat briefcase, embellished with crystals that glittered with every movement. Marc Jacobs presented an everyday baguette bag in olive green. A neon yellow bucket bag turned heads on the Adeam runway.
Breast pouch
This year the designers did not take inspiration from exotic countries. According to the motto “The journey is the destination” they have designed practical models for every occasion. Neck pouches are super practical for the airport and those cheap flights when you aren't allowed to take a handbag with you on the plane. They are just the right size so that some money and the passport can come inside. They are small, but nice and are made of high-quality leatherAnimal print made, or decorated with fringes and sequins.
Duffel bag shaped handbag
The next trend is also inspired by distant travels. The handbags with a duffel bag shape make the hearts of trend pioneers beat faster. Calvin Klein showed a dark blue handbag with a black chain, Balmain relied on the classic pastel colors of lavender, nude and mint, Coach presented a vintage design with floral patterns.
Transparent mini bags
The mini handbags are celebrating a comeback in 2019. Very popular are models made of transparent or translucent materials (as seen at the fashion shows of Sally LaPointe, Marry Katrantzou and Maryam Nassir Zadeh) that resemble a cosmetic bag. The mini bags are usually paired with everyday outfits.
Transparent Shopper
Fashion-conscious women discovered the trend last year. Transparency is also the key word for shoppers. The large-format plastic bag was spotted on the runways of Moschino, Giorgio Armani and Versace. It is the perfect companion on the beach or in the shopping center. The colorful handles loosen up the strict geometric shape and make it appear playful and modern.
Neon colors
Handbags in neon colors found their way into the fashion world last year. Anyone who thinks that the fluorescent signal nuances of yellow and green are not suitable for everyday use is wrong. The designers usually style them into simple outfits that take away the flashiness of the extravagant colors.
Shopping bags with print
The large shopping bag remains a popular trend this year. Colorful prints that match the clothing give it a playful and charming look. The popular polka dot patterns adorned Rejina Pyo's collection, Self-Portrait floral patterns created a cheerful mood and Alexa Chung embellished her handbags with motifs such as the Eiffel Tower and the Vienna Ferris Wheel.
Knitted bags

Today we will show you how you can wear and combine the oversize sweater like real fashionistas. Whether with skinny jeans, a pleated, medium-length skirt or tights and over-the-knee boots - the XXL sweater proves to be a particularly versatile piece of clothing. After the XXL scarf comes
Hard to believe, but true: knitted handbags are very popular. They complete any hippie look, but look particularly attractive in combination with short denim shorts and an airy blouse with applications. They also look great with an airy boho dress. No wonder that even Karl Lagerfeld couldn't resist the charm of the knitted bag. Chanel presented a bag with vertical stripes in lavender, red and white. Alberta Ferreti showed off a pink backpack on the runway. Isabel Marant's model has a leather handle and fringes.
Shell shapes and prints
Another extravagant trend caused a stir during the Chanel, Stella McCartney and Michael Kors fashion shows. The handbag with a shell shape is for real trendsetters. Or for summer vacation.
Seagrass beach bags
With a beach bag made of seagrass we won't just look good on the beach this year. It also ensures a relaxing time when shopping in the city. Loewe, Oscar de la Renta and Altuzarra presented models that impressed with a great braided structure. The sought-after accessory gives the outfit a summer flair. It looks particularly good with an airy summer dress or shorts.
French
Fringes became one of the hottest trends last summer. They have successfully established themselves and will be worn on tops this winter. But bags are also richly decorated with it. This is how Valentino and Loewe bring simple designs to life. To make the fringes stand out better, they usually decorate handbags. You can carry the fringed bag either in the crook of your arm or in your hand.
Bucket Bags
Bucket bags are not a modern invention. As early as the 16th century, wealthy farmers and nobles carried their money indoors. At that time they were considered a status symbol. The bucket bag with its bulbous shape and string continued to be an absolute classic over the next few centuries. Even if it doesn't become the it accessory this year, it is constantly present in the collections of many fashion brands.
At Fendi and Stella McCartney it has a timelessly elegant look, at Etro it exudes vintage glam, at Hermes it cuts a fine figure as a practical handbag for everyday office life. As for the colors, the fashion houses have opted for camel, brown and black.
