Cor-Ten is actually the trade name for a weatherproof structural steel that was originally patented in the USA. The steel is known for its weather resistance and is ideal as facade cladding and privacy protection in the garden. This material is particularly popular with architects and artists because it has a special industrial charm and appears warm and rough at the same time. The weatherproof rust steel is very popular in the construction industry. The structural steel is first bare and is covered with a thin top layer through a continuous oxidation process under controlled conditions. This “rusting off” is only completed after 36 months. The rust layer then protects the steel from further corrosion, similar to a layer of paint. The process is not brought to a complete standstill, but is reduced to a minimum.
The material is used particularly well in art and architecture. The weather-resistant facade claddingwith a striking rust lookis a real eye-catcher and impresses with its earthy, slightly iridescent colors. However, the material itself is not rustproof. Rust can cause stains when it rains, so water runoff should not drip onto stone floors or other components. To prevent corrosion of the substructure, this type of steel or stainless steel should also be used.
