Don't you like the idea of a simple hook rack for hanging jackets and clothes in the entrance area? Then take a look at this great and completely doable DIY project: a coat rack made from an old door. Old doors can be wonderfully repurposed and sometimes have a wonderful antique charm. And of course there are still many ways to create storage space on this door. We'll show you some nice ideas.
Make your own wardrobe from an old door with a shelf
Materials:
- three doorknobs with backplate in a vintage look
- a cupboard knob
- a beautiful old room door
- Farblack
- 50mm wire pins
- 40mm wire pins
- three wooden panels 60 x 30 cm
- 2 x 70 cm wooden table legs
- Holzleim
- M4 40mm hanger bolts
Tools:
- Phillips screwdriver
- drill
- 24mm drill attachment
- Color brush
- Cordless nail gun 18 GA for 15 - 50 mm nails
You could use a few extra helping hands. Because of the nature of the 90 degree angle and the use of the nail gun, it would be safer to have two people assemble the coat rack.
Step 1:First, the door should be cleaned and sanded. It is best to roughen the surface slightly by hand with a sanding sponge or sandpaper so that the paint adheres better. This can also be used to smooth sharp edges.
Step 2:To build the base for the wardrobe, you will need two wooden panels and two table legs. Cut the wooden panel exactly to the size of the old door. The door in this example is 60 centimeters wide.
Place the first wooden board (60 x 30 cm) on the floor and position the table legs vertically at both ends. Use a pencil to mark the desired position of the table legs.
Step 3:Apply the wood glue and glue the table leg in the desired location.
Step 4:Mount the second wooden plate onto the table legs as a table top. Place the first wooden board on the floor with the glued table legs facing upwards. Make sure they are at a 90 degree angle. Use the nail gun and the 40 mm nails to nail the table top. Turn the construction over and repeat on the other side so that everything is firmly secured.
Step 5:Now the table construction should be attached to the door. Lay the door and table structure on their side and glue the base plate to the end of the door. Adjust both elements exactly, otherwise the wardrobe will not stand straight upright. Use the nail gun and 40mm nails to nail the base plate to the door. Work from left to right.
Step 6:Stand the door and table structure upright and repeat the step above for the table top. Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the edge of the table and press against the door. The nail gun is used to nail the table top to the door.
A notice:Aligning the nail gun could be a difficult task. If a nail goes crooked and not straight through the door and wood panel, you can always use cutting pliers to rip it off.
Step 7:Assemble the top shelf.
First the shelf supports and then the shelf are mounted on the door. Lay the whole thing on its side to make assembly easier. Apply a thin layer of wood glue along the back of the shelf bracket and adhere it to the door. The top edge of the shelf bracket should be in line with the edge of the door. Use the nail gun and 40mm nails to secure the back of the shelf bracket to the door. Then assemble the shelf in the same way.
Step 8:Now you can paint the finished wardrobe! A beautiful blue-gray color was chosen here. But you can also use different painting techniques and give the piece of furniture a used look. The wardrobe is painted in the desired paint color. Then the edges and arches are sanded with thin sandpaper. If you use several layers of paint, different nuances will shine through in the sanded areas. You can find out more about thishereread.
Step 9:Mount the doorknobs as hooks. First mark the exact spot where you want them to be attached. Think carefully about the height. You don't want your jackets to extend over the tabletop.
Mark the hole where the screw will be fixed. Use a 24 mm drill attachment to pre-drill the holes in the door. Use the hanger bolts to attach the doorknob to the door.
Step 10:You can mount a cupboard knob on the side of the door so that you can also hang up your lady's bag or hat. Important keys can also find their proper place on the hooks. Choose the hooks according to the intended use.
One of the advantages of this wardrobe is its versatility. It creates storage space, keeps things tidy and enhances the hallway.
Things that are used frequently should be readily available. Anything that is used less often can end up on the top shelf. You can store small accessories such as hats, scarves, gloves, scarves and cuffs there. The contents are safely protected from dust and dirt in a storage box with a lid. In any case, viewing windows or labels are practical.
Baskets under the console also provide additional storage space. These are perfect for storing magazines, newspapers, umbrellas or children's toys. With their pleasant texture, storage baskets exude a friendly atmosphere in the hallway.
The console table is an all-rounder
The small console table provides space for small items or frequently used items. In the hallway it usually functions as a shelf for key cases or handbags. But it can also be a clearly visible place for vases, photos or seasonal decorations. With a mirror, the console can also be used as a practical dressing table.
The table top can be visually emphasized with a contrasting color. Like in the example above. The entire wardrobe is painted bright red, only the table top is black. Only one hook is mounted on the door, in the middle. A beautiful wreath made of gypsophila has found space there. The crystal doorknob is also a beautiful detail.
Variant without drilling and nailing
For those who are not very good with a drill and a nail gun, the following idea is useful. The door is simply propped between the hallway wall and a freestanding console table. This saves you a lot of effort, but the result is just as effective.
The hallway wardrobe always reveals something about the habits, preferences and furnishing style of the residents. That's why it should definitely not be neglected when it comes to interior design. Let the hallway wardrobe become an expression of your individual living style. If you really like the rustic style, you can, for example, just sand the door and make it look as old and worn as possible. Jute, twigs and wicker complete the look perfectly.
Wardrobe made from old door with bench
If you want to have a place to sit down in front of the cloakroom and take off your shoes comfortably, then a vintage-style bench would be a better addition to the door cloakroom. To do this, the backrest of the bench should be removed. Then the seat and armrests are nailed from the back of the door. The garland made from fabric scraps and the decorative cushions are beautiful color accents that harmonize perfectly with the colors of the wardrobe.
A narrow wardrobe bench is not only a comfortable seat, but also an ideal storage space. Shoes that are worn every day have their place in a small shoe cabinet. Large drawers are very practical if you want to store something quickly. Your hallway will always be tidy - no more shoes lying around!
Foldable bench
What is special about this beautiful wardrobe with bench? The seat can be folded up. Rod hinges, also known as piano hinges, are best suited for this purpose because they provide even support for the folding door and help distribute weight when someone sits on the bench. The rod hinge can be shortened to the required dimensions with a hacksaw. When installing, pay attention to the opening direction.
The hooks
What ultimately turns the door into a wardrobe are the hooks. Depending on your taste, you can use simple hooks in a solid color. But vintage-style hooks would be a better fit for this disused piece of furniture. Or even better: other old items that can also be repurposed. Such as colorful furniture knobs orold cutlery.
Old door as a garden work table
A planting table is a practical thing for anyone who likes to be a hobby gardener. You can not only repot comfortably while standing on it. It also offers extra space for placing various pots or bags of potting soil. Hanging on practical hooks, the tools are always ready to hand.
Ideas for table with doors
There are so many ways to make furniture yourself from old doors. Another idea that is very easy to implement is to build a table out of an old door. Because of its dimensions it is the perfect table top. All you need is a suitable table frame. The sanded, newly painted door is simply mounted on top as a table top. This dining table offers space for up to 8 people and is also ideal for use in the garden!
Note: If it is a cassette door, the free spaces within the door surface could pose a problem. The glass plate on top offers a good solution here. You can keep cards or photos visible in the door compartments under the glass.
