The new year has barely begun and it's already all about the trends: What furniture is popular in 2021, what should the furnishings look like? 2020 was in thingsHome and furnishing trade fairsdifficult, and 2021 won't be any easier either. Nevertheless, the interior and furniture designers made a real effort!
1. Trend: Bright and warm in shades of beige and sand
Simple, elegant and as little as possible – the chic of little color is noticeable in 2021. With the soft cream and brown tones, the trend towards simplicity and pastels approaches another trend: the trend towards nature or at least a natural look. Light wood is relaxing and even large pieces of furniture fit in thereSolid wood dining tableexcellent in concept. The light colors make solid furniture, for example made of light ash wood, maple or soft birch, appear much lighter. Scandinavian tendencies in thingsShapes and materialsare consistent, because the light woods are at home in the north.
2nd trend: upholstered furniture in feminine shapes
Belonging to a really cozy, warm interiorUpholstered furnitureof course. The angular sofa landscapes, whose 90-degree angles dominated living rooms for decades, have become curved and curvy seating furniture of smaller dimensions in 2021. This year everyone can have their own armchair, you no longer lounge on a huge sofa with six people. We know the flowing, curved lines of armchairs from the 1950s, and this trend of curvy sofas has actually already been announced in 2020. The Scandinavians are not missing out on this trend either: the Julep sofa by Jonas Wagell (Sweden) with its gentle, curved shape simply invites you to sit down! And that breaks the simplicity of the muted colors, warm natural tones and light woods, because the sweeping curves take up a lot of space and ensure dynamism.
3rd trend: Minimalism can also be luxury
We already read it in the opinion pages of newspapers in 2019 and 2020: true minimalism can only be afforded by those who can afford it. Now it isLuxury in minimalismalso noticeable when it comes to furniture. The furniture trendLuxury Minimal Designimpresses in reduced living environments with particularly high-quality highlights. In other words: If the room doesn't offer much distraction to the eye, the bit of marble, granite or real leather will stand out even more. Tiny details made of gold, silver or bronze are enough to move the furnishings in the desired direction. The American label Studio Twentyseven, for example, works with reflective surfaces and sparkling details that give the sculptural tables, chairs, chests of drawers and stools something elegant.
4th trend: Smart furniture combines comfort and technology in 2021
Instinctively, one might think of lengthy setup of almost nonsensical devices via an incomprehensible user interface. But that's not the point at all. Smart furniture is simply designed so that everyday technology can be easily integrated if necessary. Beds now come with integrated lights, speakers and a screen with a television function - separate lamps and televisions are no longer necessary; the piece of sleeping furniture already combines the technology in a coherent overall design. It may be a bit of a gimmick when it comes to the bed, but in the home office a useful desk with a few technical extras is really practical. Tabulasense, for example, has thought about the workplace at home and offers pretty much everything from the tilting, ergonomic plate for the laptop to cable channels in the desk top.
5th trend: soap bubbles for everyone!
It sounds playful, it looks that way and yet it doesn't interfere with the previously mentioned simplicity. In 2021, the lights may be made of simple glass bodies; elaborate lampshades are not required. But these glass bodies have something special: they look like soap bubbles dripping down the lamp cord. Transparent glass, frosted glass, colored or plain – everything is possible. Bubbled Suspension Lights are the names of the pendant lights designed by, among others, the Dutch designer Alex de Witte. By the way, he predicted the trend, if not shaped it: he has been working with voluminous bubbles since 2013. Above a dining table made of solid wood, in a room decorated in light tones, the colorful glass shapes actually dominate the design!
