Concrete and glass characterize a designer holiday home in Norway

This small seaside holiday home is a project by Norwegian studio Lund Hagem and features a stepped concrete roof that also serves as a viewing platform. It was assummer housedesigned for Svein Lund – one of the founding partners of the Oslo-based studio – and is located on a rocky cliff in Sandefjord, on Norway's southeast coast. The 30 square meter Knapphull designer holiday home is nestled between weathered boulders and is therefore protected from extreme weather conditions.Concrete and glassplay an important role in this - although the glazed walls appear attractive and airy, they are protected under a solid concrete roof.

Extensive use of concrete and glass

The goal of the project was to utilize the area protected by the large rocks and dense vegetation. The building has a distinctive cantilevered roof without columns. It extends to the ground, forming a ramp up to the upper cliff. If you climb the concrete stairs you reach the observation deck at the top, from where you can watch the sea.

Concrete and glass also get along well with wood

Thanks to the characteristic shape of the roof, you can treat yourself to a panoramic view over the cliffs and trees towards the sea. A similar terrace below offers a sheltered outdoor area with an open Corten steel fireplace. This area can be reached from the north via a narrow path that runs through a wooded area. A concrete bench extends along the terrace and through a glass wall into the small holiday home with concrete floors.

woven wooden panels on the ceiling

The ceiling is woven with narrow oak slats and visually warms the room. The wooden platform suspended from the ceiling floats over the small living space and makes optimal use of the limited space in the designer holiday home.
