DieHistory of the Bambi trophy and the associated award ceremonyis long: The prize was founded in 1948 by the Karlsruhe publisher Karl Fritz. At that time it was still a closed society and limited purely to the category of film from which the readers of the magazine ?Film Revue? chose their favorite actors. The first winner was actress Marika Rökk, whose daughter gave her name to the fawn trophy? originally made of white porcelain based on a design by the sculptor Else Bach, which she had already designed in 1936 for the Karlsruhe manufactory Majolika. However, because the material was extremely fragile, it was replaced in 1958 with a bronze design by the sculptor Emil Sutor. This year also marked the beginning of the long-term collaboration with the Strassacker art foundry in Süßen near Stuttgart, which continues to this day. In 1962 the company was taken over by Karl Fritz from Franz Burda? and with it the Bambi awards ceremony, which has always been at home at Hubert Burda Media.

Incidentally, it is not known why the Karlsruhe entrepreneur Fritz chose a fawn as a symbol of his prize. But there is one fact: the Bambi trophy is a valuable masterpiece of art foundry with enormous symbolic character.

A single Bambi trophy weighs 2.5 kilograms. The 18-carat gold-plated fawn is 28 centimeters high (including the crystal base), 20 centimeters long and 12.4 centimeters wide. The Bambi as it looks today dates from the year 2000. The first bronze design of the deer by Emil Sutor finally received a makeover after around 50 years: The sculptor Kurtfritz Handel created a new version of the deer, even more delicate, on behalf of Hubert Burda Media , more dynamic and modern than before, but continuing with the tradition and characteristic look.
