Education: 11 things that were normal in the past and are unthinkable today

There will never be just upbringing. After all, all educational ideas and currents are always a mirror of society. This is how the anti-authoritarian education emerged at the end of the 1960s because the power and authority relationships in families were seen as a breeding ground for fascism.

Anti-authoritarians followed anti-pedagogy education in the 1970s and the next again. And each of these educational methods had a right to exist at the time.

Formerly Hui, today Pfui

Nevertheless, from today's perspective, there are things that we would simply no longer do. Not because child welfare is in danger (with one or two exceptions, but more on that), but because we currently believe that we do better than the generations before us.

And in the editorial team we would almost put our hands into the fire that in 10 years a lot will be different again that we think for the ultimate today. But let's wait. First of all, we come to the things that our parents made, which we would not repeat today.

Test yourself:

#1 television on the ongoing volume

Although today we have all the way we have all the options for having us to be felled around the clock with a cell phone, tablet, computer and laptop, in addition to streaming services and digital television, we do not do that. And even less we let our children sit too much in front of screens. Because we are convinced that too much screen time is unhealthy.

Funny, it was finally we who had turned on the flicker box before the satchel ended up in the corner.

#2 without surveillance from the house

At the weekend or during the school holidays we actually only saw our parents when the food was on the table. In the meantime, we moved around the houses with friends, drove on swimming lakes or have conquered playgrounds. Most of the time our parents didn't even know where we were.

Unthinkable today, at a time when elementary school children are already equipped with a cell phone or callable smart watch. We parents today feel the need to know exactly who the child is traveling with.

#3 absurd rule when eating

Are you allowed to drink something as children during meals? That sounds strange now, but I come from a time when you didn't do that. For the simple reason, my parents, so that you then drink yourself and do not eat. That's why there were never glasses on our dining table when we sat down to eat.

And today? Exaggerated in our house today there are glasses on every table so that the children (and you yourself) only drink enough. Always remain nicely hydrated. It is unimaginable that today you forbid someone to grip for the water glass because you sit while eating.

#4 Shopping for the big ones

In the past, children were sent off to buy cigarettes to their parents. There was no cigarette machine, then with a note in his hand to the booth, at the status that the parents gave you permission to buy cigarettes in your name.

From today's perspective, this is not only unimaginable, but simply no longer possible. The law only allows adults to acquire tobacco products. And that's a good thing.

#5 smoking everywhere

Until 2007 you were allowed to smoke almost everywhere. In trains, airplanes, offices - you were nowhere to be sure of the blue haze. And that also applied to children. Then they were sitting for 4 hours in the smoky allocation or car.

To protect children and adults alike, smoking is prohibited in most interior today. Also at public places, train stations or airports may only be smoked at the officially designated 'smoking and screens'.

#6 Sugar consumption

In the past, nobody really paid attention to how much sugar we ate or drank children throughout the day. The fact that sugar is not exactly healthy was probably a secret, but he was still harmless.

The pocket money was still invested in mixed bags and whose content was washed down with at least one can of cola, Fanta or Sprite. Didn't notice the parents anyway, they didn't even know where to be on the road.

The fact that too much sugar is actually harmful to the body has been discussed since the 1980s. Today, excessive consumption is attributed to increase the risk of obesity, metabolic diseases or even indirectly the risk of cancer.

Reading tip:

#7 Hardly sun protection

On the beach or in the outdoor pool, we used to supply sunscreen to protect our skin from sunburn. Whenever it went out to play in summer, no sunscreen was applied or worn out special UV clothing.

It is different today because you know more about the dangers from UV radiation. Sunscreen is also used every day in winter.

#8 The thing in the car

Already in our childhood there was the seat belt, thank God. However, our parents did not see it that closely if they took us on our lap, for example. There were hardly any child seats or seats. The number of space in a car also seemed to be stretched in our childhood. After a birthday party, the places were not enough to bring all the children home at the same time. There were also 7 children in a 5-seater.

Absolutely unthinkable today. One would speak of irresponsible behavior. Just imagine how the parents would look if you drive up with a crowded car full of children.

#9 ready meals

During the week, with two working parents, so -called key children came home alone after school and, thanks to finished products (or remnants from the previous day), were able to supply themselves wonderfully alone. Or it just had to go quickly and canned ravioli, frozen pizza and Co. caused full children's bellies without complications.

Today, however, you pay more attention to nutrition. And even if the TK pizza ends up on the family table, it is more often an exception as a rule.

#10 to be naked in public

In the past you could see many small children without swimming gear on the beach and plan around in the water. Hardly anyone has thought about someone else's photos of it or the child could be offensive with their nudity.

Unthinkable today. The fear always buzzes around your head that someone could take pictures of the child, worse that the pictures get into criminal hands.

#11 Treatment in the daycare center

Even during our kindergarten times (in the late 1970s and early 1980s), many children visited the crèche before their first birthday and were already used to 'staying without parents' before taking their first steps. A familiarization phase in kindergarten, as we know it today, was rarely necessary.

Today, most children only start with kindergarten after their first birthday and then the focus is on the familiarization phase and gives children between one and three years enough time to get used to the new situation. As a rule, one to three weeks of familiarization phase (Berlin model) is used, but a child needs more time to stay alone in kindergarten is also possible.

It wasn't all bad

If you read all of this, you can be surprised that we have become something. But it wasn't very bad either. It can't have been. The time in which not everything was photographed and posted, for example, feels a bit more freely from today's perspective. So maybe it's a bit of a shame. But it's just a personal opinion.
