In advance in the video: 4 tips for relaxed baking of cookies with children
Today I would like to share with you my latest discovery: food coloring pencils! They are absolutely brilliant and a saving grace for anyone who wants to bake cookies with children.
Last weekend I baked cookies with my little son for the first time. Well, he ate the dough and I cut it out and baked it. Things became more exciting for him when it came to decorating. He loves painting more than anything.
But trustingly put a piping bag with icing, food coloring and colorful sprinkles in his little clumsy hands? No way! Then the sticky stuff and sprinkles would end up everywhere but on the cookies.
Even for us adults, icing is the final enemy. But what can you do instead to keep the kids happy while baking and decorating cookies?
Dear parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles: I have made the discovery of the century that will revolutionize your cookie baking activities. Drumroll…food coloring pencils!
What are food coloring pencils?
Food coloring pens look just like felt-tip pens, they paint like felt-tip pens, they are just as opaque and bright as felt-tip pens, but their color is edible (and luckily wipes off smooth surfaces). Brilliant, right? But what is actually in these magical pens?
Food coloring sticks are made from edible dyes that are safe for consumption and are usually derived from natural or synthetic sources.
With food coloring pens you can either paint directly onto smooth, baked dough, as is the case with cookie cutters. You can also use the pens to paint marzipan or fondant. Precise, easy and much cleaner than using colored icing.
At this point I would like to show you the cookies my son painted, but unfortunately they didn't make it into the tin, just into his mouth.
Instead, you see the creative outpourings from the adults present. We had just as much fun painting the cookies.
Where can I buy food coloring pencils?
I bought the ingenious pens from the German brand Shantys in a well-stocked bakery shop. But you can also just do itorder online*.
Personally, I am thrilled with the pens. You can paint very precisely with them and the colors are bright and come out well on the cookies. Of course, you can also use the food coloring pens to paint other baked goods or marzipan and fondant.
