Hearty spaetzle casserole: quick recipe with ham and cheese

If I see cheese spaetzle on a menu somewhere, I just have to order it! Because the combination of spaetzle, spicy cheese sauce and crispy fried onions is irresistibly delicious.

So why not make a casserole out of it? This spaetzle casserole with ham is not only easy to prepare, but also a real treat for the whole family. With a creamy cheese sauce and hearty ham, this casserole is sure to quickly become your new favorite recipe.

Recipe for a hearty spaetzle casserole

Ingredients for approx. 4 servings:

  • 500 g spaetzle (fresh or from the refrigerated shelf)
  • 200g cooked ham
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 200 ml Sahne
  • 200 ml milk
  • 150 g grated cheese (e.g. Emmental)
  • 2 THE BUTTER
  • 2 EL Mehl
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • nutmeg
  • Fresh parsley (optional)

And this is how it works:

1. First preheat the oven to 180 degrees top/bottom heat.

2. Cook the spaetzle in plenty of salted water according to the package instructions, then drain and set aside.

3. In the meantime, cut the ham into small cubes. Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Heat the butter in a large pan and sauté the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the ham and fry briefly.

4. Add the flour to the onions and ham in the pan and sauté while stirring. Deglaze with the milk and cream and bring to the boil, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. Stir in the grated cheese until melted. Season with mustard, salt, pepper and a pinch of nutmeg.

5. Lightly grease a baking dish. Pour the cooked spaetzle into the dish and spread the ham and cheese sauce evenly over it. Mix everything well so that the sauce combines well with the spaetzle.

6. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley to serve.

Tipp:You can vary the casserole as desired by adding additional vegetables such as peas, peppers or mushrooms. Different types of cheese also give the casserole an interesting touch.
