Do you like to eat warm meals or are you more of a team butter bread? When I come home after work, I look forward to a freshly cooked dinner. Because of the increasing energy prices, I have been trying to save electricity and thus money during cooking.
Where do you best start? Starting cooking is of course not an option. Who wants to do without pasta and soups!
With our five tips, it is easy to save electricity when cooking and thus do something good for the wallet and the environment. And you certainly don't have to delete your favorite dishes from the menu.
Save electricity thanks to the kettle
The kettle is a real all-round talent when it comes to the cooking process. The device is not only wonderful for teas and brewing, it also helps you to save electricity with the preparation of pasta or rice dishes! Because the kettle not only heats the water faster, it only consumes around half of energy compared to the electric stove.
Simply fill the amount of water that you need for your ingredients into the kettle. How much fluid you need should not assess too high! If you use more water, this extends the cooking process and thus the energy consumption.
Cook vegetables with less water
Do you only prepare small portions of vegetables? Or do you just want to cook a few potatoes? Then only put 1 to 2 cm water in the pot. The water boils faster, you save energy and the meal still succeeds.
Often you don't have to leave the stove switched on during the entire cooking process. Turn it to a lower level after boiling and switches it off completely a few minutes before the end of the cooking process. The residual heat is usually sufficient to cook your ingredients.
By the way, with this trick you benefit twice:You not only save electricity, but also protect the vitamins in your vegetables. This is because many vitamins and all minerals are water -soluble. The less liquid you add, the better! And the lower heat also harms the ingredients less.

Use the correct oven setting
The program of your oven also has an impact on electricity consumption. TheConsumer centerreveals: "Baking with circulating air saves about 15 % energy compared to top and bottom heat". If possible, use the recirculation function.
When using your oven, you can save electricity in other types:
- Do without the preheat:With many dishes, such as frozen pizza and cake, it is not necessary to heat the oven. By refraining from this additional step, you can save up to 20 percent of electricity.
- Switch off the oven earlier:You can use the residual heat of your oven to bake your dishes ready. Simply switch off the oven a few minutes before the end of the baking time or reduce the temperature.
- Keep the oven door closed:It is tempting to look into the oven in between to check the cooking level of your meal (or just to enjoy the good smell!), But you save energy if you don't open the door.
Pay attention to the size of the pot, lid and hob
Do you know the saying "every pot finds its lid"? If you want to save energy, this wisdom helps you: use a well -matching pot lid when cooking. So you can accelerate the cooking process considerably and use less electricity.
Also choose a pot that fits your stove. Because if the hob is too small, heating takes longer. If the hob is larger than the pot, it consumes its energy that would not have been necessary for the cooking process. By the way, you also save with a small saucepan - so don't use too big pot for your dishes.
Our tip:A pressure cooker can also help save energy. The high temperatures inside the pot shorten the cooking time and are ideal for gentle preparation. So are delicious dishes like thisfinished in no time.
Use microwave, toaster and Co.
Especially if you prepare smaller portions, it is worth not always switching on the stove or oven immediately. Many small kitchen appliances are well suited to save electricity and time:
- Microwave:You can heat small dishes or drinks in the microwave. Of course, entire meals cannot be prepared, but the device is wonderful for a warmed up lunch. Your food is quickly finished and you use less electricity than when using the stove.
- Toaster:Is there anything nicer than freshly baked rolls? You can also bake bread from the previous day in the toaster. The baked goods become nice and crispy and the oven can remain off.
- Thermoskanne:Use a thermos every now and then to keep your fresh coffee warm. In contrast to the warm-up function of the coffee machine, she does not use electricity. And: you always have the coffee at hand!
