The researchers found that very low-energy diets and meal replacement with supplementation provide the most effective way to manage weight. The international research team analyzed published meta-analyses about which diet is best suited for this purpose. Both genetic and environmental factors influence the development of type 2 diabetes. However, it is increasing rates of overweight and obesity that are driving a current global diabetes epidemic. Without international strategic commitment to effective prevention strategies, an estimated 629 million people worldwide will be affected by it by 2045, researchers say. According to the study authors, a low-calorie diet results in sustained weight loss provided energy expenditure exceeds intake.
