Best diets 2020: A jury of experts compiled the rankings

Many people use the turn of the year to make good resolutions for the new year. And every January, US News & World Report announces the best diets in the world. In 2020, the Mediterranean diet was named the best diet for the third year in a row.

The Mediterranean diet– although not a diet as such but more of a lifestyle – focuses on eating less red meat, sugar and saturated fat while incorporating more nuts and whole grains. This diet, along with an active lifestyle, can provide a long list of health benefits, including a healthy ideal weight, heart and brain health, cancer and diabetes prevention. The Mediterranean diet also ranked first in the report's four other categories: Best Diet for Healthy Eating, Easiest Diets, Best Diets 2020 for Diabetes, Best Diets 2020 Plant-Based.

Other diets that appeared in the top three included the DASH diet and the Flexitarian diet, which tied for second place. Known for its ability to promote healthy blood pressure, the DASH diet relies on plenty of vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat milk, while avoiding saturated fat, flour, and sugar. The Flexitarian Diet is all about eating vegetarian as often as possible, with some meat allowed every now and then.

The Weight Watchers eating plan and MIND diet complete the rankings. The MIND diet is essentially a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, which focuses on brain foods to prevent dementia, such as whole grains, berries, green leafy vegetables, olive oil, poultry and fish.

To rank the best diets of 2020, USNews assembled a panel of experts including nutritionists and doctors who specialize in diabetes, heart health and weight loss. The expert panel then rated each diet in seven areas, including effectiveness, ease, etc
