Since 1970, an annual day of action has taken place to remind us how beautiful our world is and to draw our attention to environmental protection. Originally celebrated only in the United States, Earth Day is now honored in over 170 countries. It has now become so popular that the United Nations has declared April 22nd Earth Day. Even Google today shows a Google Doodle on its website, in keeping with the motto. This year the focus is on protecting biological diversity. Numerous events are taking place around the world to mark the occasion. We summarize the most important topics that will be discussed in 2019 for you:
1. A children's charity Terre des hommes criticizes the Brazilian president. According to statistics, more than 240 environmental activists were killed worldwide last year alone. Most of them have campaigned against large construction projects that could destroy the habitats of protected animal and plant species. The right-wing Brazilian President Bolsonaro wanted to close environmental agencies, restrict the rights of environmental activists and even wanted to withdraw from the Paris climate protection agreement.
2. A new non-governmental organization founded in London called ClientEarth made headlines last year. What's special about it: More than 60 lawyers want to work for youpromote environmental protection. In their work program: suing governments to stop certain projects that are harmful to the environment, training colleagues and even judges in other countries on environmental protection and even lobbying in Strasbourg. So far, the organization has successfully supported the activists' work across Europe.
3.Children of kindergarten and school ageparticipate in various Earth Day events nationwide. Numerous clubs teach the little ones the basic principles of animal protection. This is a fun way for them to learn how they can contribute to environmental protection. This year, for example, numerous feeding places for bees will be created.
4. In Bavaria, where the state government recently announced that it would like to adopt a bill proposed by the “Save the Bees” referendum, bee protection is even legally regulated.
5. Google Doodle also wants to make users aware of this today and alternately presents different types of plants and animals on its homepage.
