Rye is said to be a better choice for weight loss compared to wheat when it comes to a hypocaloric diet. This emerges from a new study that Swedish researchers recently published. Eating whole grain rye bread offersunlike refined wheatvaluable health benefits. The study results show that people who consumed high-fiber products made from whole grain rye lost more body fat and overall weight than those who ate equivalent products made from refined wheat.
What makes the hypocaloric diet with rye more beneficial
This is the largest study to date to evaluate the effects of specific grains on body weight and body fat. Accordingly, the study authors focused specifically on rye. 242 overweight men and women between the ages of 30 and 70 took part. They randomly ate carefully adjusted daily amounts of refined whole grain wheat or rye products with the same energy value. All participants also received the same general advice on healthy eating from a nutritionist. Although both groups of participants lost weight during the study, one kilogram more weight loss was observed when rye was consumed. The difference was due to fat loss, according to the researchers. A better understanding of why different people react differently to the same foods can pave the way for tailored nutrition. In addition, the study already shows a causal connection between rye intake and weight loss through fat reduction.
The researchers examined the subjects at weeks 0, 6 and 12. They took measurements that included body weight and body composition, taking blood samples and assessing subjective appetite. After 12 weeks, the participants in the rye group had lost 1.08 kilograms more body weight and 0.54 percent more body fat than the other study participants. However, there were no consistent group differences in subjective appetite. The research team warns that more work is needed before it becomes clear what mechanisms make whole grain rye good for weight loss on an individual level. Particularly positivethis studyis that the whole grain products used are easily available in normal supermarkets in most European countries. Consumers can therefore react immediately to the new results.
