Around 50 climate activists prevented a Dutch cruise ship from leaving the port of Kiel on Sunday to draw attention to the “catastrophic local and global consequences of cruises” and the poor working conditions on board.
The ship 'Zuiderdam' of the British-American cruise company Holland America Line was supposed to have sailed to Copenhagen in the afternoon. An activist group calling itself Smash Cruiseshit cruised in front of the ship's bow with small boats and climbing equipment and stopped it. Some of the activists climbed onto the ship's bow and mooring lines. Five activists also occupied a crane on the harbor quay.
Police forces from all over Schleswig-Holstein, fire and rescue services as well as the federal police were dispatched to the scene. The blockade began in the late afternoon and ended around 10:15 p.m., according to activists. The cruise ship finally left about 6 hours late. According to police reports, 46 people were taken into custody. Twelve of them had to spend the night behind bars.
Pop singer Madonna outraged by “NYT” portrait
The pop singer Madonna worked with NYT on an artist portrait. The article was published a few days ago. The pop icon has now spoken out and announced on her Instagram page that she is rather dissatisfied with the end result.
During the protest, activists unfurled a banner that read “Cruises kill climate.” The Smash Cruiseshit group and other climate organizations posted live updates of the action on Twitter.
“In the last few years we have been handing out flyers again and again. However, the Kiel seaport has always tried to restrict our freedom of assembly in every possible way and prevent us from addressing the passengers,” says an activist named Johanna in a press release. “Now we are making it clear in this way: We will not tolerate any further expansion of cruises.”
According to the German Nature Conservation Association (NABU), the emissions of a single cruise ship due to the use of heavy fuels can be compared to the pollutant emissions of 1 million cars. While cruise ships are using new technologies to reduce their emissions, overall emissions are still rising becauseMore and more cruises are being offered, said the action group.
The campaign group “Friends of the Earth” has assessed international cruise ships for their environmental damage. Overall, Holland America Line was in the middle of the pack.
