Among the many things at the international technology trade fair this yearCES 2020unveiled in Las Vegas includes a new external SSD from Samsung that features an integrated fingerprint reader for added security and doubles read and write speeds over previous generations.
With CES in full swing, everyone is excited about the plethora of new PC form factor solutions and smart things for the modern home. Crazy peopleGaming-Setupsand rotating 4K televisions are just a few of the numerous products and prototypes on display.
Given the plethora of devices, it's easy to overlook something like Samsung's new Portable SSD T7 Touch, which won the CES 2020 Innovation Award. Whether you need extra storage or not, since Apple has decided to continue selling the MacBook Pro with a modest 128GB internal SSD, the T7 Touch has a lot to offer.
The new external SSD retains the compact format of its predecessor T5 and presents itself with aelegant, slim aluminum housing. The portable storage offers a built-in fingerprint reader to keep files safe, in addition to the usual password protection and AES 256-bit hardware encryption. You can register up to four different fingerprints if you want to share the memory with friends or colleagues.
Unlike previous generations, the new T7 Touch features a blue indicator light that Samsung calls “Motion LED.” The blue LED ring around the finger pressure sensor lights up when the SSD is connected. More importantly, the company has improved the performance of the external storage with read speeds of up to 1,050MB per second and write speeds of up to 1,000MB per second, which is twice as fast as the T5. However, you have to use a device with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port.
Samsung's T7 Touch weighs just 58 grams and is available in various configurations. Those planning to grab one will have to spend 145 euros for the 500GB version, while the 1TB and 2TB variants cost 215 euros and 405 euros, respectively. They should be available in over 30 countries by the end of this month.
