The experts at Öko Test recently published a new study. The study tested more than 400 toothpastes and found that almost one in two did not meet the criteria. In particular, toothpastes that do not contain fluoride and therefore cannot offer effective protection against tooth decay fail the test. We have summarized the most important test results for you:

1.Many adult toothpastes do not contain fluoride. However, the German Society for Dental Preservation recommends toothpastes containing fluoridePrevention of tooth decay.A fluoride content of one gram per kg is considered optimal. Over 80 pastes that do not contain fluoride, including around 50 natural cosmetic products, were therefore rated as “poor”. Children's pastes are an exception, there is no clear guideline and products without fluoride are also permitted.
2.Harmful foaming agents can cause mucous membrane irritation.Toothpastes that contain sodium larilsulfate are considered particularly aggressive. But products that contain the chemical PEG can also weaken the mucous membrane. The test results are clear: every sixth toothpaste contains both sodium larilsulfate and PEG!
3.Triclosan,which is effective against bacteria and fungi, could promote antibiotic resistance. That's why the products that contain it fail the test.
Toothpastes in the Öko Test: Are toothpastes really effective for white teeth or for sensitive mucous membranes?
4.Some toothpastes for whitening teeth have not been proven to be effective. That's why out of over 90 toothpastes, only 16 were rated “good”. When it comes to pastes for people with sensitive teeth, the situation is similar: more than half of the tubes tested were described as “defective”.
5.For children's toothpastesthere is another problem. This is less about the content and more about the information on the packaging. There is usually no information on the labels as to whether the paste contains fluoride or not.
