Tiles are the classic for bathrooms and kitchens. But a new trend seems to be taking hold: bathrooms only partially tiled. More and more people are laying tiles only in wet areas, that is, in places that are in direct contact with water, and painting the remaining surfaces with paint. This tile design has many advantages: it is quick, cheap and practical. However, you need to know to what height the tiles should be laid andwhat bathroom coloryou have to choose.
Tile the bathroom floor to ceiling or half height?
Tiles in the shower area are a must
In wet areas, that is, on the wall in the shower and next to the bathtub, it is best to use ceramic tiles. Standard shower cubicles are generally offered in a height between 185 and 200 cm. This means that the height can be optimally adjusted to the installation situation or to the height of the user. Also atWalk-in showers, which are separated from the rest of the bathroom by an elegant glass panel, the shower head is usually located at a height of around 200 cm from the floor. The tiles on the walls in the shower area must be laid at least up to this height.
And what height is a bathtub?
Most bathtubs have a height of 45 to 50 cm to make it easy to get into. Of course, it also depends on whether the bathtub is free-standing, built-in or combined with a shower. For free-standing bathtubs, a wall tile height of 120 cm is ideal. At aShower-bath combinationYou should lay the tiles either room-high or back to 200 cm.
Guideline for the installation height of the overhead shower: body height + 20 to 30 cm
Tiles in the sink area
If you only want to partially tile the bathroom, you can go for itSink heightdirect. As a rule, the top edge of the wash basin is installed at a height of 82 – 86 cm. In order for tiles to effectively protect the wall behind the sink from water splashes, they should usually be installed up to a height of 120 cm from the floor. This is the optimal height of the tiles even for a hanging toilet and a free-standing bathtub. In this way you can visually create a beautiful frame for the entire bathroom.
Tile height in the bathroom:
- In the shower– At least 200 cm above the ground
- Behind sink– Up to 120 cm above the ground
- Behind the bathtub– Ideally 120 cm above the ground
- Behind toilet– Ideally 120 cm above the ground
Differences in height seem interesting
If you have decided to have a shower in the bathroom, it is not a problem if the height of the tiles behind the sink and in the shower area are different. You can even accentuate the shower area with a different color or pattern of tiles. The difference in height will bring a feeling of dynamism to the bathroom and can also visually enlarge the room.
Pay attention to the height of the other elements in the bathroom:
Window, door, sloping roof
The decision on the height of the tiles can also be made based on other elements of the interior design or the furnishings of the bathroom. Choose an element as a reference point. Very often the height of the door determines the arrangement of the tiles. Their top edge can also be half the height of the window or a quarter of the height of the mirror above the sink. Who aBathroom in the atticplans, you can also use the height of the wall under the slope as a guideline.
Choose the right wet room color
The bathroom has a specific microclimate. Walls and ceilings in the bathroom are constantly exposed to moisture, temperature fluctuations and water. All of this makes them an ideal breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Normal acrylic paints are not suitable for such conditions. If you only want to partially tile the bathroom, you should protect the rest of the walls appropriately and use a special wet room paint.
A good bathroom paint is characterized by high abrasion resistance. This means that the walls can be washed and scrubbed without damaging the coating. Manufacturers often advertise these types of products as being washable or stain-resistant. Of course, it is worth looking at the technical card and checking the wet abrasion resistance of the paint. These criteria are regulated by the European standard DIN EN 13 300.
Water-repellent and scrub-resistant paints are best suited for the bathroom. The wall painted with them repels water and dirt, making cleaning easier. You can simply wipe with a dry cloth or a damp sponge to remove a stain.
What else should you pay attention to when looking for bathroom paint? It is good if the product has biocidal properties and therefore offers effective protection against mold, fungi and bacteria. Experts also recommend choosing vapor-permeable emulsion paints so that the walls can breathe.
You are then completely free to decide on the color and finish. Matt, semi-matt, satin and semi-gloss wet room paints are available on the market. Just keep in mind that light-colored walls are definitely more practical and scuff-resistant than dark-painted walls.
