As already mentioned, not much is needed for the simple chain:

  • something to pierce
  • string, yarn or ribbon; Wire is also suitable
  • Chestnuts

You can use various tools for drilling. A drill with a thin attachment is probably the easiest and fastest option. But not everyone has a drill. In this case, the classic awl or a hand drill is also ideal, but a simple nail can also be used.

Tipp:If you regularlyMake crafts with chestnuts, acorns and the like, it may be worth investing in a special craft kit for chestnuts. These usually consist of:

  • Hand drill
  • toothpick
  • Holder for the chestnuts to avoid injuries when drilling through
  • sometimes sets also include additional craft materials such as googly eyes, pipe cleaners, pom-poms and feathers

And it's that easy

The task itself is not that difficult. For small children, an adult should definitely take care of them.

  • Insert the chestnut into the holder and screw it tight. If you don't use a holder, place them on a wooden cutting board (for example) and hold them firmly with your fingers.
  • Take the selected drill bit and add a hole through it. The diameter of the hole depends on the type of cord selected.
  • Thread the string through all the perforated chestnuts. To make it easier for yourself, you can wrap the end of the string with tape. This makes it easier to push it through the hole.
  • Once you have reached the desired length, cut off the remaining cord and knot the two ends together.

Whether as a classic, horizontal garland or vertically in several rowslike a curtain in front of the window– Chestnut chains are simply the perfect hanging decoration. You can also combine the chestnuts with other materials for this purpose. You can get colorful accents with the help of pompoms, for example. The best way to thread yarn through pompoms is to use a needle. Alternatively, you can also use wire instead of yarn.

If you don't want to hang the necklaces randomly like garlands, you can also simply drape them on any surface. For example, if it snakes around the other autumn decorations on the table runner, it creates a pleasant, autumnal ambience that can be further enhanced by candlelight.

Make an autumn wreath from the chestnut chain

For a wreath like this, you can also use wire instead of string to make it more stable (practical if you just want to stand up the autumn wreath and lean it against the wall instead of hanging it). For an even more autumnal and versatile look, combine the fall fruits with fallen leaves, felt leaves, beads in autumn colors or whatever else you can think of.

Alsocolorful pompomsare well suited, as you can see. However, if it is important to you that the “autumn” theme is exclusively addressed, just leave it with typical autumnal colors.

Super simple caterpillar made from just 3 materials

We recently showed you howCaterpillars without drillingcan produce. But if you want a movable chestnut caterpillar, you should perhaps choose this classic version with string. Tie a knot at the end of the string before stringing the punched chestnuts.

If you would like to use the cord as a feeler, as in the example, you can simply double it before you start threading it. The knot goes slightly below the loop. At the end, cut the loop open and the two ends of the cord that now stick out are the feelers. Add some googly eyes and you're done!
