Creative painting with children: instructions for sunflower
Sunflowers create a cheerful atmosphere even on dreary autumn days. But how do you make a sunflower? You can paint a summer flower with acrylic paints, but soft pastels are better for kindergarten or elementary school children. For the craft project you will need yellow, blue, black and orange construction paper, glue and scissors.
Craft instructions:
- Print out the sunflower template and trace it onto construction paper. Cut out a black circle, five yellow petals and four orange petals.
- Let the children do the detailspaint as desired. Practice different painting techniques. Use an orange and a red color and paint with the light color into the dark color. Or you can smudge the colors with your fingers. If the color lines are placed next to each other, you can also create color gradients. You can lighten the dark shades with plasticine.
- Assemble the sunflower on a sheet of construction paper.
Creative painting with watercolors: autumn leaves
If you're looking for an easy painting project that's fun for both toddlers and adults, then you canbeautiful autumn leavespaint and practice using watercolors creatively. You need the following materials:
- Paper for watercolor with a density of at least 200 grams. To prevent the paper from curling, you can stretch it to the work surface with wax tape.
- Watercolors or colored pencils that can be painted like watercolors.
- a brush
- a pencil
- Black and white wax crayons
- a cup or a cup of water
- possibly a stencil for an autumn leaf
Directions:
- Freehand drawing an autumn leaf. You can also use a template.
- Trace the contours of the autumn leaf with black wax crayon.
- Paint the autumn leaf from top to bottom, choosing tone-on-tone shades to later create gentle color gradients.
- Paint the edge of the autumn leaf with light yellow paint, wet the brush and draw the paint into the interior of the autumn leaf.
- Apply the other colors: yellow, light orange, orange and red.
- Crumple up a sheet of paper and paint in the colors by dabbing lightly.
- For the background around the autumn leaf, apply light blue, azure blue and dark blue and paint with a wet brush. Let the paint dry and then draw waves with the white wax crayon.
Creative inking with children: The four seasons
Autumn, winter, spring and summer: The next idea for creative painting with children aged 3 and over visualizes the change of season. These instructions are ideal for little artists, but parents or older siblings need a little help with painting.
Materials:
- a template for a tree without leaves (see below)
- Watercolors
- black acrylic paint
- two round brushes, size 10
- Paper for watercolor
- a lockable brush cup with leak protection and lid
- cling film
Directions:
- Print out the template and transfer it to watercolor paper. Paint with a flat brush and black acrylic paint and let dry overnight. Parents can take on this task completely and make several templates.
- Line the work surface with cling film. Alternatively, you can put the picture in a shipping box and save yourself a lot of hassle cleaning. On sunny and warm days you can also take the “painting class” outdoors.
- Put some red watercolor in a bowl and mix it with water. Then pick up the color with the second flat brush. Hold the brush over the paper with your right hand and lightly dab it with your left hand, creating splatters on the paper. Let the paint dry.
- Then continue with the orange and yellow paint until the tree has beautiful fall foliage.
If you prepare several tree templates, you can design the tree in any season. For spring you can combine petrol blue, grass green and dark green. For summer you can paint the tree with grass green and pink. For the winter palette, choose different shades of white and blue, symbolizing snow and frost. As the name suggests, watercolors are water-soluble. However, intense colors contain a lot of pigments and can leave stubborn stains on clothing and furniture. Therefore, you should protect the work area with cling film, newspaper or old bedspreads. Do not spray near walls as they are difficult to clean.

Creative painting: painting technique inspired by the painter Vincent Van Gogh
The next pictures were inspired by the world-famous painter Vincent Van Gogh. The artist is considered one of the first modern painters. His paintings can be quickly recognized by their unique painting technique. You can “interpret” this painting technique in a child-friendly way. The next instructions are suitable for children in primary school. You need the following materials:
- Acrylic paints or oil paints
- a flat brush size 10
- Paper for watercolor painting
- a pencil
- a fork
- Wax tape
Directions:
- Stretch the paper onto the work surface with wax tape.
- Draw different motifs (meadows, moon, stars) with a pencil. Choose shapes that are as simple as possible, for example drawing several circles for the stars.
- First paint the meadow with grass green and then apply two or three strokes of dark green. Paint the stars yellow. Then apply azure paint around the moon and stars. Fill in the gaps with dark blue, orange and purple.
- Tip: Split the image. First just paint the meadow and then, while the colors are still wet, draw waves and zigzag shapes with the fork.
Creative painting with blackboard foil and chalk
The next craft idea trains concentration and skills and is ideal for children of kindergarten age. Autumn leaf silhouettes can be created quickly and easily using self-adhesive blackboard foil and blackboard chalk. These are the necessary materials:
- a sheet of A4 white construction paper
- black blackboard foil, self-adhesive
- Blackboard chalk, various autumn colors (green, yellow, red and orange)
- an autumn leaf template
- Paper tape, double-sided
- a pair of scissors
- cotton swab
Directions:
- Cut the black blackboard foil and stick it onto the sheet of paper.
- Print and cut out the autumn leaf template. Attach to the black board foil with strips of adhesive tape.
- Trace the outline of the autumn leaf very closely using different colors of blackboard chalk.
- Then use your fingers to smudge the colors outwards.
- Carefully tape off the template. Gently wipe the edge of the autumn leaf with a damp cotton swab.
Create stamps from cookie cutters
Sometimes the little artist doesn't feel like painting. In this case, you can simply stamp wrapping paper. You will need a flat disposable plate, cookie cutters and oil paints. You can also use acrylic paints, but then you can no longer use the cookie cutters when baking. Acrylic paints are very difficult to remove and should under no circumstances be consumed.
Creative painting for toddlers: create stamps from cotton swabs
A beautiful picture can be created by several painters working together. The next idea is suitable for families with several small children and offers entertainment for little artists aged three to 6 years. Of course, parents should also help in this case. You need the following materials:
- Paper for watercolor
- a pencil
- blue watercolor
- Acrylic or oil paints
- a flat brush size 10
- a round brush size 6
- cotton swab
Directions:
- First draw the trees without leaves.
- Paint the paper sky blue and let the paint dry.
- Color the trees with the round brush.
- Add some yellow, red, orange and green oil paint to a disposable plate. Take several cotton swabs and dip them in the yellow paint and then stamp autumn leaves. To make it quicker, you can tie the cotton swabs together with a rubber band. Repeat the process with the orange and red paint.
- Then stamp the grass with the cotton swabs.
The concept of creative painting is ideal for little artists. The goal is to try out new painting techniques and practice fine motor skills at the same time. The children can let their imagination run wild and improvise with paints, brushes and stamps. The fun is guaranteed. The instructions are ideal for children aged three and over who have already practiced using different colors. Older children and adults can also take part and, for example, make stencils, cut out complicated motifs or glue different details together. Of course, the works of art can then decorate the children's room, the hallway or the kitchen wall.
