Everyone knows the problem: you have already bought or made presents and notice that some of them have a specific shape. Wrapping bulky gifts with paper can prove to be a difficult task. At the same time, you don't have any gift bags with you. In this case there is only one thing that helps: making a bag out of wrapping paper. With the right folding technique and instructions, you can do this quickly.
The next folding instructions prove to be really helpful when you need to wrap last minute gifts. Or if you have bulky gifts that would otherwise be difficult to wrap.
Sheneed except packaging paperjust a few materials and accessories, most of which you probably have lying around at home. So you need:
- wrapping paper
- Tesa-Band
- double-sided tape
- Scissors
- Bow as decoration – optional
- Tulle ribbon for the handles – optional
Measure the gift
1. First measure the gift and cut the wrapping paper. Leave a little more space up and down. Place the right side of the piece of paper down and fold the two sides towards the middle. Then glue them on.

2. For the base, fold the bottom open side up. This is crucial for the soil depth and should be tailored to the gift size. Next, pull apart the open bottom side and fold the top and bottom sides to the middle and tape them slightly overlapping.
3. Fold the top side down and press the bottom from the inside. Check whether everything is well glued. If desired, you can close the top side with decorative clips. Our tip: Take mini wooden boards on clips. So you can write the recipient's name on it. If you don't have something like this at home, you can simply use Advent calendar clips or hair clips.
Decorate the gift bag appropriately, close it and add handles
4. So the gift bag is basically finished. However, you can continue to decorate and embellish it as you wish, or add handles made of organza ribbon. You can also make a gift tag and attach it to the gift bag. Proceed as follows:
- If you have a pendant, attach it to the decorative bow and attach.
- Optionally, you can punch four holes at the top of the bag. Cut organza ribbon and thread one end through two opposite holes and the other end through the other two holes. Optionally, you can also use twine.
- Tie the two ends together and the gift bag is ready.
Tips:
- The wrapping paper is only suitable for light gifts as it tears quickly. If you have heavy gifts, then it is better to use kraft paper.
- Cut a piece of cardboard and place it inside on the floor.
- If you use printed wrapping paper with words or patterns, make sure the designs are facing upwards when folding.
- If you want to wrap a lot of presents, you can make lots of bags. If you have some pieces left over, fold them so they don't take up much space.
Make wrapping paper
Don't have any wrapping paper at home? Then you can just DIY it. All you need is kraft paper. Let your imagination run wild and stamp beautiful patterns on it or arrange pine branches, cones and rose hips as decoration. You can also sprinkle the kraft paper with glitter, stick it with stickers or embellish it using the napkin technique. You can also paint it any way you like or decorate it with scraps of fabric such as lace. It looks particularly beautiful when you cover it with various decorative tapes.
