Physalis alkekengi, also known as lantern flower and bladder cherry, is an attractive, robust perennial plant that thrives in sun or partial shade and flowers from July to October. It develops heart-shaped, dark green leaves and white flowers.
In autumn, the plant forms lantern-like calyxes that protect the berries inside and turn orange or red when ripe. The perfect addition to your fall decorations.
In September and October, when the seed pods turn bright orange, you can use them for fresh floral arrangements. Cut the stems when they are still strong and green rather than brown and shriveled. Remove all leaves from the stem. The leaves don't have a long shelf life when placed in a vase, but the seed pods will stay fresh for about a week.
