Blue hydrangeas are something very special. The color brings a touch of romance to the garden and is the highlight of the outdoor area for many gardeners. To ensure that the shrub retains this beautiful nuance year after year, the next trick comes to the rescue.
Acid soil for beautiful blue color
This year the hydrangea blooms blue, but next year the color fades or the flowers turn pink. Everyone now knows the explanation - the soil in the home garden is not acidic enough. The hobby gardener can help with this and add aluminum sulfate to the soil.
The result is often not satisfactory - theFlowers change colorpartially or remain very bright. This is due to the irrigation water. For German gardens, tap water is used almost exclusively, which increases the pH value of the soil and thus reduces the effect of aluminum sulfate. To prevent this, you can use the hydrangeasdiluted vinegarpour.
Watering hydrangeas with vinegar: instructions
First of all: Under no circumstances should undiluted vinegar be used in the garden. Instead, take a 5 liter bucket, fill it with water and add 1-2 tablespoons. Pour the water into the root area of the hydrangeas. Repeat the process after two months at the earliest. It is best to water the hydrangea at the start of the flowering period when it has already formed flower buds. Water the shrub with rainwater.
NB:Not all hydrangeas can be dyed blue. There are certain species that contain the purple flower pigment delphinidin. These include, for example, farmer's hydrangeas and plate hydrangeas.
How can you be sure whether your own tree can be dyed blue?
If you bought a shrub with blue flowers, you can continue to dye its flowers blue in the coming years. When purchasing a new plant, you can choose a suitable variety when purchasing. Alternatively, just check the flower buds – if they are very light blue then they can be dyed.
