It is certainly clear that it should always be real natural stone. They have the property of remaining beautiful and robust for many decades and at the same time showcasing even the finest engravings. There are certain natural stones that have become established for cemetery design and these are:

They have low porosity, which makes them resistant even at very low temperatures in combination with moisture. Of course, the gravestone is obviously made of natural stone. But various other elements can also make a difference to the grave design, sometimes more or less, depending on how much space you want to leave for plants, arrangements and lanterns, for example.
Modern grave design with gravel areas
A very popular double or single grave design is one in which the entire area between the grave border is filled with gravel. This means you no longer have to worry about weeds, because the grave is covered with a water-permeable film before it is filled with gravel. The grave doesn't necessarily have to be a boring gravel area. You can place plant bowls or buckets on it, as well as candles, lanterns and other decorations.
Decorate graves with stones – Create patterns with gravel
If a completely filled area is too much of a good thing for you, you can create a nice pattern with the gravel instead. The usual choice for this is the diagonal from one corner to the other and a wave pattern, but you can also come up with something different. A border is recommended so that the stones do not wash away over time and there is also a barrier to adjacent plants. The areas without gravel can then be planted - for example with ground cover.
Instead of creating such a gravel path, you can also divide the grave into planting and gravel areas. Here too you have a free choice: a flower circle in the middle and stones around it or a triangle separated on the diagonal and one decorated with stones and the other with flowers. Or come up with a different pattern! This variant is also well suited if you want to create a grave design with gravel and bark mulch.

First distribute the stones, which also look natural or can be shaped. In between, you can plant any plants you like, as naturally as possible. Grasses and flowering herbs such as thyme are particularly ideal for such a natural grave design, the only care for which is pruning once a year and perhaps one or two irrigations during very hot periods.
