Plant old dishes: How to convert tea cups made of porcelain into flower pots
Old dishes can be converted into flower pots quickly and easily. You need the following materials:
- one or more cups (with Sterassen)
- Alternatively: a disused soup bowl or teapot
- A drilling machine with a ceramic drill or a diamondhill drill or plant pockets
- a base (e.g. wooden board)
- Paper tape
- Petroleum
- A scissors
- Flower seeds/young plants/tubers
- Substrate
In the following we explain step by step how you can create a beautiful mini garden in an old porcelain:
1. The good drainage is very important so that the water can drain and no waterlogging forms. If this is possible, you can try to drill small holes through the bottom of the cups. For this purpose, they apply plenty of petroleum to the inner and outer side of the cup. The surface should be completely wet. Then glue a piece of paper tape on the spot where you want to drill a hole. Work with the ceramic drill and drill with low pressure and the lowest speed through the porcelain dishes. Rinse the dishes thoroughly and let it dry. Check the surface for cracks. Place the bottom of each cup with a thin layer of bloating. In this way, you can prevent the small holes from clogging and ensuring that the substrate does not run out when watering.
2. If the porcelain is too thin or brittle, then you can put a small planting pocket in each cup. Fill the planting pocket with soil and use the young plants.
3. Select the right flowers or plants. For example, herbs thrive very well in plant pockets. Succulents come with very little soil and water, so they are suitable for planting tea cups. In tea cups you can also stage individual onion plants such as crocuses or daffodils as soloists. If you want to plant a soup bowl, you should choose plants that get along well. Herbs like Dill, Majoran and parsley harmonize very well. Rosemary and basil or oregano and sage are also suitable for a mixed culture. Suitable flower combinations are magic bells and wolf milk or verben and geraniums.
4. Fill the tea cup or the teapot or the soup bowl up to half with substrate (flower earth for flowers, specialists for herbs and cactus soil for succulents) and then use the flowers, succulents or other plants of your choice. Cover the roots with earth.
Plant old dishes: plants for the mini garden
Herbs andSeasonal flowersare true classics among plants for the mini garden. But there are also alternatives, for example:
- Mini-shuttle.Mini succulents are used to refer to young plants, which are one year old and a maximum of 6 cm high. In the garden centers, sets from 20 hours or 30 hours are sold in wooden boxes.
- Flowering ground cover.Creeping plants are easy to care for, get out with little water and are primarily flat roots (so do not need a deep pot). For example, there are two types of bell flower: star pads, the carpet-bell flower.
- Creeping conifersLike different ground cover conifers, the old dishes are also suitable for planting. Such are, for example, the Stone Elder, the Carpet Wachholder and the Dwarf Ball Lifetime.
- Cactusare true survival artists who will also feel comfortable in small tea cups.
- TillandsAlso thrive very well in cups that you can fill up with decorative sand.
What can I do with old dishes? Transform the teapot into flowerpot
They have already pierced holes, filled clay and substrate into the container and planted young plants, tubers or seeds. Now comes the time to spice up the old dishes. For this purpose, you can paint the porcelain dishes as desired. In the handicraft shops you can find special porcelain colors that do not have to be burned. Acrylic paints are also suitable for painting porcelain cups, teapots and saucers. These are not abrasion -resistant and are not suitable for use outdoors.
Cups, saucers and bowls have an oval shape and painting can prove to be a difficult task. Beginners can therefore use stencils. Numerous self -adhesive stencils in the vintage style are available in the handicraft shops. You just have to attach the template to a clean and dry cup and then spread it with a flat brush with color. Then let the colors dry and carefully remove the template.
Alternatively, you can also use the old dishes with theBeautify the service technology. This creates beautiful flower patterns quickly and easily, which give the dishes a vintage look. Even when it comes to mass goods, the cups and plates look confusingly similar to the finds from the flea market.
If it is an old tableware set, then some parts may have been broken or lost. Fortunately, the mix and match style is trendy. So you can combine cups and subplants from different sets.
