When choosing a holder, you should pay attention to durability. You need to take care of the wood first. To ensure that your wood is free of critters or bugs and salt, you should complete a few tasks. The problem is with wood that has been left outside in bad weather for a long period of time.

Soaking driftwood

Imagine you are walking on the beach and come across a beautiful piece of driftwood. What's fascinating is that it twists and bends in different ways. What a snapper! Nevertheless, it was obtained from seawater. You should also keep this in mind when purchasing driftwood for your arrangement. Make sure it comes from fresh water rather than salt water.

Soaking wood in water is the best method to remove excess salt from salty driftwood or any type of wood. Be sure to change the water daily until the TSD number matches the amount of water added. Unfortunately, this project will take two days to a week. It is enough to change the water andto check the TSD values.

Find natural, high-quality logs

  • So you're walking down a path and you see a beautiful fallen tree branch. Orchids can be securely attached to most trees in Germany.
  • Most corks are actually a type of oak wood that orchids thrive on. Since oak trees have two sides, it is best to mount them on the rough side if possible.
  • Wood from plum trees and mountain laurel also works well.

Bake branch

Baking is another option. Before placing the wood on a baking sheet, turn your oven to low heat. The cookie sheet is a favorite. A baking time of at least one hour, preferably two, is optimal. This will eliminate any potential pests on the wood and your arrangement is guaranteed to be safe from unwanted visitors.

While it may be overkill if your log has been baked, it's better to be safe than sorry. These creatures will be difficult to remove from your plants once they establish themselves.

Problems with orchids that have already been tied up

Like all plants, untied orchids are susceptible to salt deposits that build up over time. This buildup can occur from municipal water or well water, but also from repeated application of excessive amounts of fertilizer.

Orchids can be killed by too much salt. Regularly leaching the salt from the orchid holder can keep this problem at bay. Soaking the wood and orchid roots in purified water for about an hour should be enough as long as the salt buildup is minimal. If necessary, repeat the same steps a week later.

If the orchid is already affected by salt accumulation, more extreme measures are required. Before placing the orchid back in a clean holder, remove it from the holder and immerse its roots in distilled water for at least an hour.
