Your palm trees will withstand winter storms better if you take preventive measures.

Winterize palm trees with mulch

Add a layer of organic mulch around the base of the palm tree. This acts as a barrier against temperature fluctuations, keeping moisture in and insulating the roots.

In winter the palm trees definitely need to be watered. The soil should still be kept slightly moist, although they don't need as much water as in the warmer months. Control soil moisture levels and water as needed.

Always remember that it is best to avoid problems. You can greatly improve your palm trees' chances of surviving the winter if you take these steps before winter even begins.

In areas where frost or freezing temperatures often occur, it is important to provide plants with additional protection. If the nights get cold, wrap a light blanket or cloth over the crown of the palm tree. Plastic does more harm than good as it traps moisture and should therefore be avoided.

Before a predicted frost, you can carefully wrap a blanket or cotton towel around your shorter palms. To protect palm trees in winter, you can also wrap their trunks and leaves.

  1. You can use a frost protection fleece, a jute bag or a straw mat.
  2. Tape the material in place and wrap it around the trunk.
  3. You can tie the palm fronds together or wrap them around the top of the tree with jute or a straw mat. This way the palm tree stays safe and warm all winter long. The snow should not be removed as it serves as an excellent insulator.
  4. To further protect the heart or primary bud of higher palms, a certified arborist may also tie the fronds together.

When the frost has passed, the fronds should be unwrapped and the cover removed.

As autumn draws to an end,put your palmto a sheltered place, such as a wall, where it is protected from wind and rain. Place the pot on a wooden board or a plexiglass pane to keep the frost from below. To prevent the roots from freezing, cover the planter several times with bubble wrap, coconut fiber, or jute to insulate it. Additionally cover the trunk of your palm tree with insulating material. Finally, place a jute sack over the palm fronds to protect the palm crown.
