Creating a small Japanese garden – tips and beautiful design ideas in pictures

Matching plants and trees

Depending on exactly how “small” your yard is, you may consider a tree (or a few). The tree is one of the main elements in the Japanese garden and symbolizes life. Plum or cherry trees are recommended for wonderful blossoms in spring. A bonsai tree would also be a suitable choice, as it is typical of the Zen garden and also makes the area appear larger.

In addition to trees, there are other plants that bring the popular Japanese flair into your own allotment garden. With their colored flowers in red, orange, white or purple, the azaleas are a real eye-catcher in a small garden. After the flowering period, only a small part of their leaves fall, which is why they also provide more greenery outdoors. With boxwood hedges, the garden area stays green even in winter. Peonies and irises can take over the blooms after the azaleas, so that the Japanese garden never looks colorless.
